Ode to Joy is one of the most famous tunes of Ludwig van Beethoven and of all classical music.  The melody is extracted from the last movement of his Symphony no.9.  This arrangement for two violas and piano incorporates all of the excitement of the original while being accessible to the young student.  The arrangement allows the performers to play three different ways; as a solo with piano, two violas and piano, or as a viola duet without piano.

Included are the piano score and duet part as well as fingering suggestions.

Bach's Prelude in C (BWV 846) is arranged as a trio to include two violas and a piano. While the piano part stays true to the original version, the two violas are playing a complementary harmony to accompany the beautiful sounds of JS Bach. The piano part is slightly challenging, but the two viola parts are easily learned in just a few rehearsals. This is a great ensemble piece for a student performance and is also appropriate as weddings music and church services.

Brandenburg 6 is a unique composition because of its original instrumentation (2 lead violas + string orchestra), and because of the nature of the first movement- that starts with a canon for the 2 violas playing the same line just one eighth note apart!

 Its fun to play, but hard to get the needed players to make it happen.  So here is a reduction where the violist plays the first viola part, and a keyboard does the second viola part plus a reduced version of the backing strings.

  This  piano reduction is meant to accompany a violist playing the original first viola part.  If you want an excellent contemporary typesetting of the first viola part,  you can get it at the Free Scores website-

Dvorak's Humoresque is a great, characterful little piece and this arrangement captures the charm and whimsy of the original piano version. This arrangement, for two viola, follows the original structure. From the light, bounding opening to the darker, more intense middle section which finally returns to the opening idea that brings the short composition to a close.

This score is ideal for performance as well as as a teaching aid for more proficient students with interest in both parts to keep both players entertained! It is an excellent piece for demonstrating contrasting moods and playing styles.

This is the fourth of a set of six sonatas for 2 transverse flutes published in Paris in 1728. The playing score has been edited and arranged for a pair of violas. Viola players during the eighteenth century were largely ignored so here is an opportunity to have fun playing music from this period in the style of the original. The musical notation has been modernised. All edits are shown in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines. The trill ( +) has been replaced by tr and the mordants signs have not altered. The five movements, Andante, Allegro, Aria - Affetuoso, Minuet & Giga are for equal players of intermediate ability or above.

Murray’s compositions have been recorded by The Fibbonnaci Sequence and Piers Lane among others with reviews such as ‘Corruscating’ (Independent) and ‘Highly imaginative’ (The Sunday Times).
