SKU: A0.589121

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by David McKeown. Folk,Hanukkah,Jewish,World. Score. 6 pages. David McKeown #6017129. Published by David McKeown (A0.589121).

7.40pm is a traditional Russian Jewish tune, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for two Violas.

It isn’t completely clear where the title 7.40pm comes from. One interpretation is that 7.40pm was the time the Odessa tram conductors finished work and danced to this tune. But there are versions titled 7.40am which may refer to the time of Jewish early morning prayers. Whatever the origin, there are several Russian recordings of 7.40pm that predate the 1917 revolution.

7.40pm is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. After a slow and expressively beginning, the melody switches to dance tempo.  7.40pm is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. With a performance time of a little over three minutes, this version of 7.40pm is perfect for recital and concert performances, both formal and informal. Easter Bunny Hop is a fun and original duet written by David McKeown for two Violas.

Easter Bunny Hop is one in a series of ten Easter-themed duets each written in a different Rock’n’Roll style. The Hop was all the craze in the late ‘50s, when early Rock’n’Roll became popular at school gymnasium dances. Danny and the Juniors’ 1957 hit At the Hop defined the genre.

Easter Bunny Hop is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, with the accessible key and range balanced by the fast tempo, some syncopated rhythms and many accidentals. With a playing-time of around one and a half minutes, Easter Bunny Hop is a perfect addition to any performance program, formal or informal. Composed by David McKeown. Concert,Latin,Standards,World. Score. 7 pages. David McKeown #5755329. Published by David McKeown (A0.589112).

Joropo de Justina is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for two Violas.

This duet is based on the traditional Latin style of Joropo which is the national and traditional music of Venezuela. The music and its accompanying dance comes from the central plains area and is also found over the border in parts of Colombia. The basic pulse of the Joropo is 3, but this is overlaid with complex cross-rhythms. The main instrument is the harp, along with cuatro and maracas as the only percussion instrument. In the modern era other instruments may join the ensemble, especially bass. This arrangement represents the song style of Joropo, with the vocal alternating with instrumental breaks.

If you play to an advanced intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. The many cross rhythms will provide a rhythmic challenge and there is little time to catch breath; following the articulation in the score will help convey the style. Joropo de Justina has a performance time of around two minutes at full tempo. You can listen to a full performance the Clarinet version of this duet by following the YouTube link above.

Composed by William J Kirkpatrick. Arranged by David McKeown. Christmas,Jazz,Praise & Worship,Sacred. Score. 4 pages. David McKeown #6560273. Published by David McKeown (A0.594207).

Away in a Manger is a much-loved Christmas carol. This version is arranged as a duet in a Jazz Swing style for two Violas. Click on the YouTube link above to listen to a full length performance of this arrangement played on Clarinet.

The melody of Away in a Manger, Cradle Song was written by William J Kirkpatrick, an Irish born American composer. The origins of the lyrics are less certain. Throughout the nineteenth century they were attributed to Martin Luther, but this version of events has since been discredited.

With a performance time of around two and a half minutes, this version of Away in a Manger is perfect for seasonal celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. The jazz swing style is a fun and fresh take on this familiar traditional tune.

Away in a Manger is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The original 3/4 meter has been altered to 4/4. Rhythms are syncopated, as one would expect in swing music, and there is plenty of articulation detail to help deliver an authentic style. The melody is played twice, with intros and outros. This arrangement is suitable for players at an intermediate or early advanced level.

Rumba de Ruth is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for two Violas.

This duet is based on the traditional Rumba street music of Cuba. Rumberos sing semi-improvised melodies over the Rumba clave rhythm with other percussion added, and the accompanying dance is an integral part of the performance. The rhythms of Cuban Rumba have travelled all over the world, providing the foundations for Son and Salsa and the ballroom Rhumba among many other styles.

If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. The steady clave rhythm is implied throughout, and following the precise articulation in the score will help convey the style of the Rumba. Melodies are clearly articulated and played with passion. Rumba de Ruth has a performance time of just under three minutes. You can listen to the Clarinet version of this duet by following the YouTube link above.

Kandel’s Hora is a Jewish dance tune, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for two Violas.

Kandel’s Hora was written and named after Harry Kandel. Born in Lvov, and after a short period in the Russian army, Kandel emigrated to the USA in 1905 and quickly found work as a clarinettist in vaudeville, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show and JP Sousa’s band. A brief but productive period as band-leader and recording artist followed, after which Kandel retired from performing to run a music shop.

Kandel’s Hora is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. A slow Hora in triple meter is followed by a faster Freylach version of the same melody in 4. Kandel’s Hora is suitable for players at an advanced intermediate level and above. With a performance time of three minutes, this version of Kandel’s Hora is perfect for concert performances, both formal and informal. Composed by Sigfrid Mogulesko. Arranged by David McKeown. Hanukkah,Jewish,Wedding,World. Score. 4 pages. David McKeown #6019089. Published by David McKeown (A0.589122).

Chosn Kale Mazel Tov, (Good Luck to the Bride and Groom), is a Jewish wedding tune, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for two Violas.

Often shortened to Mazel Tov, it is thought that the song was written by Sigmund Zelig Mogulesko. Born in Romania, he was a larger than life character who dominated Yiddish theatre on both sides of the Atlantic in the late nineteenth century. Mogulesko was a childhood prodigy, equally adept as a composer, playwright, singer, comedian, actor and impresario. Mazel Tov was written for a wedding scene in one of his productions but has since become one of the best-known and loved Klezmer standards.

Mazel Tov is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. After a slow and expressively beginning, the melody switches to dance tempo, with constant variations in the accompaniment. Mazel Tov is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. With a performance time of around two and a half minutes, this version of Mazel Tov is perfect for wedding and concert performances, both formal and informal. Click the link above to listen to a full Youtube performance of the Clarinet version of this duet.
