Swing Low, Sweet Chariot is an American nineteenth century spiritual. This version is arranged as a duet for two Violas.

The words and music of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot are credited to Wallis Willis, a Native American freedman from Oklahoma. A local minister transcribed the song in 1865 and within a few years it became a firm gospel favourite. In recent times Swing Low, Sweet Chariot has been adopted by the Civil Rights movement on one hand, and the England rugby team on the other.

Swing Low, Sweet Chariot is simply arranged in keys and range best suited to the instruments. The hymn is played three and a half times, once as a ballad, then twice in a slow rock style, before returning to the ballad at the end. Grá, (Irish for Love), is a beautiful original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for two Violas.

This duet is inspired by the Irish sean-nós style of singing. Originally sung unaccompanied in the Irish Gaelic language, in more recent times the melodies have been adapted as instrumentals, harmonised and given accompaniment. The songs are most often about love and loss and Grá aims to capture this melancholy mood.

Grá is written for players at an intermediate standard and upwards. Expressive throughout, the first part of the melody is played above a drone. Simple accompaniment then builds towards a climax before the melody slips away like a distant echo. Players can add their own appropriate ornaments and variations to the melody if they wish. Grá has a performance time of a little over three minutes. Odessa Bulgar is a Jewish Folk tune, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for two Violas.

For many traditional Klezmer tunes, the first clues of their existence comes from bands making discs at the dawn of the recording era. In this case, Odessa Bulgar first appeared in a 1919 recording by Abe Schwartz’s Orchestra. Schwartz was born in Romania and emigrated to the USA around 1900, thereafter enjoying a long career in the music industry. Odessa Bulgar is a happy piece designed for dancing at celebrations.

The melody of Good King Wenceslas is Finnish in origin and dates back to the thirteenth century. The Christmas lyrics we know and love were added much later by English hymn-writer John Mason Neale and were first published in 1853.

With a performance time a little over three minutes, this version of Good King Wenceslas is perfect for seasonal celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. The jazz swing style is a fun and fresh take on this familiar traditional tune.
