Composed by Franz Xaver Gruber. Arranged by David McKeown. Blues,Christmas,Gospel,Praise & Worship,Sacred. Score. 3 pages. David McKeown #6549739. Published by David McKeown (A0.594127).

Silent Night is a much-loved Christmas carol. This version is arranged as a duet in a Gospel style for two Violas. Click on the YouTube link above to listen to a full length performance of this arrangement played on Clarinet.

The melody of Silent Night was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber in 1918, a setting for the lyrics of a young priest, Joseph Mohr. After flooding had damaged the church organ in Oberdorf, Austria, Mohr asked local schoolmaster, Gruber, to write a Christmas melody to be accompanied by guitar. Silent Night was the result. The carol remained unpublished until 1833, but has since gained huge international popularity. Bing Crosby’s version sold more than 10 million copies and UNESCO has declared the carol an intangible cultural heritage

With a performance time of around two and a half minutes, this version of Silent Night is perfect for seasonal celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. The gospel style is a fun, fresh and soulful take on this familiar tune.

Silent Night is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The 9/8 meter may be feel unusual to some, and there is plenty of articulation detail to help deliver an authentic style. The melody is played twice, with a short intro and a bluesy outdo. This arrangement is suitable for players at an intermediate level.

Composed by David McKeown. Holiday,Love,Wedding,World. Score. 4 pages. David McKeown #6211999. Published by David McKeown (A0.590476).

Liebe, (German for Love), is a beautiful original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for two Violas.

This duet is inspired by the German Baroque style, particularly the slow compound-time compositions of JS Bach and the canonic sonatas written by GP Telemann. Both composers filled their works with deep emotion, transcending the strict musical rules of the period. Liebe is a Canon, with the first part following the second throughout, one bar behind, like lovers in intimate conversation.

Liebe is written for players at an intermediate standard and upwards. The melody should always carry momentum and adding plenty of expression will help convey the style. Liebe has a performance time of around three minutes. O Holy Night, was written to celebrate the renovation of the church organ in the French village of Roquemaure. The words were written by a local wine merchant and the music shortly after by composer Adolphe Adam. The popularity of this carol has spread far beyond France in recent times, with well-known versions recorded by artists as diverse as Nat King Cole, Andrea Bocelli and Mariah Carey.

This version is arranged as a duet for two Violas. The linked youtube performance is the clarinet version of this duet.

Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The melody is expressive and legato; both parts require dynamic contrast and the lower part in particular explores a wide range of the instrument. The overall performance time is around four and a half minutes.

Composed by Ernst Anschütz. Arranged by David McKeown. Christmas,Jazz,Praise & Worship,Sacred. Score. 4 pages. David McKeown #6574699. Published by David McKeown (A0.594327).

O Christmas Tree, (O Tannenbaum), is a much-loved Christmas song. This version is arranged as a duet in a Jazz Waltz/Swing style for two Violas. Click on the YouTube link above to listen to a full length performance of this arrangement played on Clarinet.

The melody of O Christmas Tree is Polish in origin and dates back to the sixteenth century. The lyrics we know and love were added much later by German composer Ernst Anschütz in 1824. The lyrics were originally a homage to the fir tree, using the evergreen foliage as a metaphor for constancy and loyalty. The association with Christmas appeared later in the nineteenth century.

With a performance time of three minutes and a half minutes, this version of O Christmas Tree is perfect for seasonal celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. The jazz waltz style is a fun and fresh take on this familiar traditional tune.

O Christmas Tree is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. Rhythms are syncopated, as one would expect in jazz waltz music, and there is plenty of articulation detail to help deliver an authentic style. While the key is straightforward, there are several busy passages to keep players on their toes. The melody is played four times, the last in 4/4 time with a short coda. This arrangement is suitable for players at an intermediate level.

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by David McKeown. Christian,Christmas,Gospel,Praise & Worship,Spiritual. Score. 4 pages. David McKeown #6129397. Published by David McKeown (A0.589855).

Go Tell It on The Mountain is an Afro-American Spiritual Song. This version is arranged as a duet for two Violas.

Go Tell It on The Mountain is most often considered a Christmas Carol with the original lyrics,

Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere;

Go tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born.

Nothing is known of its origins, but it first appeared in print in an 1865 collection of Spirituals. More recently, the lyrics have been adapted to support the struggle for human rights, most famously by Peter, Paul and Mary in 1963.

Go Tell It on The Mountain is simply arranged in keys and range best suited to the instruments. The melody is played twice in swing style after a brief introduction; after a short breakdown the key changes and the melody is repeated at a slower tempo. Click the link above to listen to a full Youtube performance of the Clarinet version of this duet.

Go Tell It on The Mountain is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. With a performance time of a little over three minutes, this version of Go Tell It on The Mountain is perfect for worship and concert performances, both formal and informal.
