The workshop was centered around the theme Encoded Composition, where the music written portrayed some sort of hidden meaning, either illustrated through the music or through the individual notes composed on staff paper. All the pieces created during the workshop were performed by professional musicians (including solo instrumentation for piano, viola, unpitched percussion, and pitched percussion). In all, there were applicants from around North America, including the United States, Canada, and El Salvador.
