This is a setting of two old hymn tunes, Retreat and Rockingham, originally arranged as a choral anthem with violin obbligato but here rearranged as a violin solo with piano. It is suitable as prelude or offertory music. The first tune, Retreat, is most commonly found in American hymnbooks for the hymn From Every Stormy Wind that Blows, hence the title, but in the United Kingdom mostly Communion hymns are sung to these melodies. Rockingham is often used as the tune for When I Survey the Wondrous Cross. If the title is to be printed in a church bulletin I recommend using whichever hymn is most familiar in the context as the title! The recording begins at the end of the introduction, in measure 8 - it was done at a youth camp as Chapel Prelude so there is some background noise. This duo was originally written for violin and piano, and so it translates well into a flute and piano piece. This arrangement for alto flute is in the same key as the original, with a few changes to accommodate the alto's range. I also added notes and changed some passages to create a little more interest. Other than a few of those changes, the piece remains mostly as Reinecke wrote it.
