His first teacher wa his father, Sebastião Vianna (assistant and reviser for the Brazilian composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos), and most recently furthered his studies in other institutions in Brazil, Italy, and Sweden. He has also published over forty articles both in Brazil and Europe. Viana has received 25 awards in Argentina, Brazil, Europe and the USA, including the Prix de Composition at the First Composition Competition Festin Choral 2013 in the city of Billère (France), first prize at the Susanville Symphony Composition Competition 2012 (USA), first prize in the international composition contest of Lys Music Orchestra 2001 in Belgium, first prize and the audience prize in the Lambersart 2006 International Contest of Composition in France. Quartet for Piano and Strings (A Sea Liturgy) (2009) was jointly commissioned for the Moscow Studio for New Music and the Arcturus Chamber Ensemble (Sarah Darling, artistic director). It is dedicated to the Arcturus Chamber Ensemble on its 10th anniversary. The work is cast in a single movement and is conceived as a sea liturgy. It attempts to conjure up an imagined set of spiritual rituals (not connected to any specific religion)-a ceremony of transformation and renewal performed in the context of a sea landscape. Though not broken into movements, the formal design of the work could be seen as follows: Processional - (Ritornello) - Invocation - Offering - (Ritornello) - Baptism - Rebirth - Recessional As with so many of my works, much of the initial musical planning took place in the context of the oceanscapes of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. Those particular sea landscape were foremost in my mind while writing. The listener may also discard the imagined liturgical apparatus and simply listen to the work as a series of seascapes. (For the purposes of narrative clarity, the above section descriptors will be used in the below narrative.) The opening Processional begins with focused, austere intensity: the instruments unfold from a single pitch (E) into a more rich harmonic landscape. A Ritornello of pulsating string harmonics leads into Invocation, a warmly lyrical discourse. The Offering is a faster, jubilant development of the Invocation, where the prayerful melodies of the Invocation are transformed into a gift for the sea. A return of the Ritornello leads to the Baptism. In this section, heterophonic melodies unfold out of the new substrate pitch (D). In the transforming crucible of the water, these lines becomes more and more extended harmonically. The Rebirth is a dancing development of the Baptism; the harmonic extensions are pushed from dissonance into chords of pure joy. Emerging out of the afterglow of the Rebirth is the Recessional, in which the music of the Processional is revisited, now transformed by the ritual to center on the pitch D. The Recessional fades away peacefully, yet fervently.

Edition based on Ms. D MÜu, ms. 775Score (20 pages) and Parts (friendly performance edition): Violino principale, Violin I, Violin II, Violin III, Viola, Violoncello and Harpsichord.The Violin Concerto in A major (TWV 51:A4), which has come to light only fairly recently, does not take as its musical model the song of the nightingale (as in ‘La Bizarre’ [TWV 55:G2]) or of the goldfinch (Vivaldi), but the croaking of the common frog, also called ‘Reling’ in certain regions of Germany, whence the concerto’s subtitle. Nothing better could be expected of a composer who found inspiration even in crows and in the out-of-tune playing of village musicians! Although this concerto, which the manuscript attributes to Telemann, bears traces of his personal style, other features, such as the exceptionally high solo part, leave room for doubt. At a structurally important point in the first movement the soloist produces no more than a succession of repeated notes, ‘a-a, a-a’, which infect the other parts as well. Of course, this is the vowel that the frog croaks, given a distinctive tone-colour by use of the open A string and stopped D string. But worse is to come. In the second ritornello the orchestral violins ‘forget’ the beginning of their theme, whilst the cello inappropriately pushes its way into the foreground. The setting of the second movement (Adagio), probably a moonlit stretch of shallow water, then audibly inspires a pair of courting frogs to make sweet music together. We are given the opportunity to rejoice in their croaking offspring in the concluding Menuet and its rapid Double. This movement entirely dispenses with concertante sounds of nature and thereby betrays its origins in the suite, where it always takes its accustomed place in Telemann’s music. If we knew that a satirist was at work in this ‘Relinge’ Concerto, someone who was deliberately exhibiting all these deviations from good taste, then we could infer with some certainty that the composer is indeed Telemann. Since his own concertos ‘smack of France’ (as he puts it in his autobiography of 1718), we may most likely credit him with permitting his not at all ‘sullen old heart’ a little joke at the expense of the relevant concertos of a certain Italian composer… – Peter Huth (trans. (A0.976507). This sonata is a solo transcription of the first movement of Domine’s Piano Concerto #1 in B-flat minor. The sonata begins with a slow introduction that juxtaposes two opposite harmonic realms represented by the interval of a diminished fifth. As the opening sequence drifts aimlessly through a cloud of amorphous sonorities, the principal theme is suddenly and aggressively thrust center stage by an angry theme marked Agitato. This theme wends its torturous way to the contrastingly quiet subordinate theme. An episode of melancholic discourse ensues, creating an air of confidential intimacy. The exposition ends with an elided dominant cadence which is left unresolved and that leads directly to the development section. Chord clusters built on hexachords provide a serialized variation on the principal theme. This tripartite antiphonal sequence works toward a culmination as the theme is expanded in rhythmic layers, finally reaching a cacophonic explosion. A retransition based on the slow introduction leads to the recapitulation, this time with alternating variations on the principal theme. After the lyrical restatement of the subordinate theme, the coda confronts us with a starkly bleak musical atmosphere that concludes with a fiery flourish. This transcription was made at the request of piano pedagogue Joanna Ezrin for Vera Weber, who has played it to great acclaim in numerous competitions and recitals.

Andean Refrains, composed by Dan Heslink The composing of Andean Refrains resulted from the composer’s travels in the Andes Mountains of Venezuela, where he came to know and enjoy the melodies of the indigenous Andean band. Although the marimba is not an instrument of that region, it seems to be well-suited to the music’s technical and expressive demands.   Requiring four marimbas and one xylophone, Andean Refrains is an original composition employing tradition Andean musical styles. Some of the five parts require four mallets, the others require two. It is best to perform the bass part on a marimba that can play two octaves below middle C, but if no instrument with that range is available octave transpositions of some notes is acceptable. In this work the marimbas imitate the wide vibrato of zampoñas, or panpipes, with rapidly alternating octaves. The notched-end wooden flute, quena, is suggested with hard mallets on the xylophone, and of course the guitars and charango (Andean ukulele) transcribe well to marimba with four mallets. The bass end of the marimba provides the register of the guitarrone. Chaccha, the rattle of llama toenails, is simulated by instructing one marimbaist to at times strike the bar with the handles of the mallet.   With this work the composer hopes to capture the quiet dignity and inevitability of life’s events expressed by Andean musicians.
