The piano part has been purposely kept as simple as possible but the oboe and clarinet parts are for players who are comfortable with chromatic notes, especially in the short middle section. It is interesting to note that Albeniz almost completely abandoned the composition of piano works after La Vega, although his fame was mainly focused on the works for this instrument. Although La Vega was planned as part of a cycle of melodies written on poems by his patron Money-Coutts and was therefore used as an independent piece of an orchestra suite, this work was originally composed for piano. According to the autographed dating found on the last page of the manuscript, Albeniz finished La Vega at first on January 26, 1897 in Auteuil, in a Paris neighborhood. In the course of the following weeks, decided to make profound changes. He deleted the last five pages of the Vega, added six at the beginning and composed a different ending of seven more pages. This revision ended in Paris on February 14, 1897, and Albeniz wrote down on the last page: La Alhambra, symphonic suite on poems by F. B. Money-Coutts: nº 1: La Vega. La Vega is an evocation of the Granada plains on the edge of the city, a musical reflection, as the composer put it, contemplated from the Alhambra Palace. Claude Debussy, on hearing Albeniz play the piece, enthusiastically told him of his wish to immediately go and discover Granada.

It’s also a love song; One of the things I like the most is the balance between contemplation and passion that Rachmaninov accomplishes. The poem, by the Countess Glafira Adolfovna Einerling, a contemporary writer of the composer who wrote under the pseudonym of Galina, simply describes a sunset. I don't know if the landscape portrayed is similar to what Rachmaninov could see from his home but no doubt he felt it part of his own; he even changed the beginning of the poem so he said that the nice place was here. Zdes' khorosho is a song full of lyricism, seemingly simple but demanding for the singer (please pay attention to the pianissimo at the last verse, which seems to arise from nowhere), with an exquisite accompaniment. Some scholars think that the true essence of Rachmaninov is found in songs like that, rather than in his athletic piano concerts.Songs of Comfort and Hope is inspired by the series of recorded-at-home musical offerings that Ma began sharing in the first days of the COVID-19 lockdown in the United States. Over the course of the last year, Yo-Yo Ma’s #SongsofComfort grew from a self-shot video of Antonín Dvořák’s Goin’ Home into a worldwide effort that has reached more than 20 million people. Ma and Stott marked the next chapter in the project with this album, offering consolation and connection in the face of fear and isolation. God: My Helper, Comforter, Companion, Provider, Protector is a 71 measure arrangement for 4-5 octave handbell choir, and OPTIONAL 3 octaves of handchimes. It is a medley of Christian hymns that deal with some of the attributes of God, as they relate to His followers. Specifically, it includes Abide with Me, God Will Take Care of You, Day by Day and Just When I Need Him Most. It is probably a level 3+ arrangement. The God Will Take Care of You section starts with a duet in the handchimes, with the melody line switching from treble clef to bass clef, in the verse. Of course, handbells can be used instead of handchimes, if desired. In the chorus, martellato is used in the bass clef, while there is a descant going on in the high treble clef, with the melody sandwiched in between. In the last section (Just When I Need Him Most) interesting chords, bass runs and melody line doubling, with chords filled in between the doubled melody notes, build to an ending culminating in a repeat of the last musical phrase, at a slower, more majestic tempo. The first 3 selections are more laid-back; the last is presented in a more energetic fashion.

Published by Greg Woodward (A0.1460359). My third string quartet is a playful and melodic work, encompassing a wide range of styles and moods with a high degree of thematic unity. The joyful, dance-like character of the opening eventually disintegrates into a moment of sorrow, before a pensive, introspective section with elements of Herrmann and Shostakovich. A grand crescendo leads to a huge A major chord (a reference to the Beatles' A Day In The Life) that gradually becomes more dissonant as it progresses underneath a constant high A pedal point in the first violin. A chant-like section featuring open fifths follows, before a driving, angular section in 5/4. This recurs a few times interspersed with some musical episodes before ushering in a majestic transformation of the earlier chant-like section. After this runs its course and dies out, a final section revisits the dance-like energy of the first section which borrows thematic material from all through the piece before speeding into a final jazzy major sixth pizzacato chord.This would make a good concert piece.Visit my YouTube page for more performances, arrangements and compositions.

Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808707).      It took Johannes Brahms some 21 years to finish his First Symphony, but it was certainly worth the wait. A consensus masterpiece, Brahms’ First is outstanding, considered one of the finest symphonies coming out of the Austro-German tradition. Many see the finale as the centerpiece of this work, especially its main theme, the wonderfully noble chorale. But of course, every movement of this symphony is comprised of compelling melodies. The work is full of them. Some of the most beautiful occur in the slow movement, the second, which is marked Andante sostenuto. In this arrangement, those melodies are transformed into a moving setting for brass quintet, a musical expression of release and calm.
