If you learn along with the Video Course, Carrie will show you how to go beyond just playing the notes on the page by sharing tips on how to bring out the melody line so it sounds musical and doesn’t get lost among the many notes. She’ll also show you exactly how to practice those lever changes so that they feel controlled and predictable rather than rushed and frantic! The full title is CABBAGE and BEEF or Composing on St. Patrick's Day in the Time of the Coronavirus.  This was a fun exercise in writing a melody made up entirely of letters from the musical alphabet starting, of course, with CABBAGE and BEEF.  It was a fun thing to do as I was sheltering in place during the pandemic.  The challenge was composing a melody that made sense and harmonizing it nicely.  The time signature is 5/4 because these are uncommon times.  There are 13 words that make up the melody.  Can you find all of them?

The Hebrides overture was inspired by this segment of Mendelssohn’s Scottish travels.  The work is an early example of a tone poem: a musical representation of the scenery, wind and weather of the Scottish Hebridean islands, reflecting their sudden and infinite changeability. After some revisions, the overture received its first performance in May 1832 and remains a favourite with audiences to this day.  It has been central in establishing – and sustaining – the popularity of Fingal’s Cave as a tourist destination. This is an adaptation of an arrangement that was originally created for a woodwind course held on another Scottish island – Skye, which is the largest and most northerly of the Inner Hebrides.

The piano part has been purposely kept as simple as possible but the oboe and clarinet parts are for players who are comfortable with chromatic notes, especially in the short middle section. It is interesting to note that Albeniz almost completely abandoned the composition of piano works after La Vega, although his fame was mainly focused on the works for this instrument. Although La Vega was planned as part of a cycle of melodies written on poems by his patron Money-Coutts and was therefore used as an independent piece of an orchestra suite, this work was originally composed for piano. According to the autographed dating found on the last page of the manuscript, Albeniz finished La Vega at first on January 26, 1897 in Auteuil, in a Paris neighborhood. In the course of the following weeks, decided to make profound changes. He deleted the last five pages of the Vega, added six at the beginning and composed a different ending of seven more pages. This revision ended in Paris on February 14, 1897, and Albeniz wrote down on the last page: La Alhambra, symphonic suite on poems by F. B. Money-Coutts: nº 1: La Vega. La Vega is an evocation of the Granada plains on the edge of the city, a musical reflection, as the composer put it, contemplated from the Alhambra Palace. Claude Debussy, on hearing Albeniz play the piece, enthusiastically told him of his wish to immediately go and discover Granada.

Featured, of course, in the Julia Roberts and Richard Gere film (1990) and now in its own stage musical, Oh, Pretty Woman was originally recorded by Roy Orbison and released as a single in August 1964, spending three weeks at number one in the US and, later that year, in the UK. The title was apparently inspired by Orbison's wife, Claudette, interrupting a conversation to announce she was going out. When Orbison asked if she had enough cash, his co-writer Bill Dees interjected, A pretty woman never needs any money. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it number 224 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In 2008, The Library of Congress selected the song for preservation in the National Recording Registry. A great song for any time of the year, your band and audience will love this toe-tapping classic from the 60s, sounding as timeless today as it did back then.

Published by Greg Woodward (A0.1460359). My third string quartet is a playful and melodic work, encompassing a wide range of styles and moods with a high degree of thematic unity. The joyful, dance-like character of the opening eventually disintegrates into a moment of sorrow, before a pensive, introspective section with elements of Herrmann and Shostakovich. A grand crescendo leads to a huge A major chord (a reference to the Beatles' A Day In The Life) that gradually becomes more dissonant as it progresses underneath a constant high A pedal point in the first violin. A chant-like section featuring open fifths follows, before a driving, angular section in 5/4. This recurs a few times interspersed with some musical episodes before ushering in a majestic transformation of the earlier chant-like section. After this runs its course and dies out, a final section revisits the dance-like energy of the first section which borrows thematic material from all through the piece before speeding into a final jazzy major sixth pizzacato chord.This would make a good concert piece.Visit my YouTube page for more performances, arrangements and compositions.

It’s also a love song; One of the things I like the most is the balance between contemplation and passion that Rachmaninov accomplishes. The poem, by the Countess Glafira Adolfovna Einerling, a contemporary writer of the composer who wrote under the pseudonym of Galina, simply describes a sunset. I don't know if the landscape portrayed is similar to what Rachmaninov could see from his home but no doubt he felt it part of his own; he even changed the beginning of the poem so he said that the nice place was here. Zdes' khorosho is a song full of lyricism, seemingly simple but demanding for the singer (please pay attention to the pianissimo at the last verse, which seems to arise from nowhere), with an exquisite accompaniment. Some scholars think that the true essence of Rachmaninov is found in songs like that, rather than in his athletic piano concerts.Songs of Comfort and Hope is inspired by the series of recorded-at-home musical offerings that Ma began sharing in the first days of the COVID-19 lockdown in the United States. Over the course of the last year, Yo-Yo Ma’s #SongsofComfort grew from a self-shot video of Antonín Dvořák’s Goin’ Home into a worldwide effort that has reached more than 20 million people. Ma and Stott marked the next chapter in the project with this album, offering consolation and connection in the face of fear and isolation.
