I am not a huge fan of Mahler's music but his Kindertotenlieder is a cultural gem!   I inadvertently discovered that the poet Friedrich Rückert who penned Kindertodtenlieder (yes, with a d ... LOL!) wrote 400-plus of these KTL poems after his two youngest children died of scarlet fever.  I bought the book @ Amazon.   After plowing through 442 of them, I winnowed it down to ten poems for my song cycle.  It is scored for soprano and piano.  NB: I cannot afford an orchestra, and it would be too much unnecessary work.  LOL!!!  The entire song cycle has a duration of ca. 35 minutes.  It ends like a mechanical music box while the soprano sings a lullaby.  Sleep is of course a perfect metaphor for being dead.  Enjoy!!!https://thomasoboelee.bandcamp.com/album/kindertodtenlieder-2020

The composition begins as a very intimate prayer - and developed gradually into an enthusiastic public prayer. The soloist performance is the heart of the composition (as it can be heard in the recording https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFl-rV95MAA), and a very good soloist is one of the keys for a successful performance. The original tunes are simply beautiful, and the arrangements try to maintain this natural beauty. It's a very communicative and touching music, excellent as a part of any choral concert, and, of course a concert of sacred or Jewish music. May be sung by any good SATB ensemble of about 12 singers or more.

Rated easy intermediate -- there are a few syncopated rhythms to pay attention to, but this will be playable for students and easily sightreadable for professionals. Sarah Cellobat Chaffee earned her bachelor's degree in cello performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music and is now based in Las Vegas. With his permission I later arranged the tune as a piano solo, adding a John Field theme as the basis for the introduction. Years later, after being stricken with cancer, Dick wrote this text to fit the piano arrangement. I then arranged the piece for SATB choir (opt. mixed quartet), and added a light orchestration. Sadly we had to say goodbye to Dick in 2022 as he made the crossing that he had so eloquently anticipated in this text.The demo mp3 is computer-generated, and thus lacks some of the nuance which you would–of course–include in live performance!I will post the orchestration (or String Quartet and Flute or Oboe) separately.

Here's a solo version with piano accompaniment. The icing on the cake, so to speak, is the addition of four violins or a keyboard playing their parts as a string pad. The arrangement is approximately 3:10 in duration. Of course, you will want to perform it with much more expression than my computer did!

Everyone gets a turn playing the melody, and the quartet only splits into two rhythmic groups, making this a good introduction to small ensemble skills. The melody is the most difficult part to play - plan to spend a good amount of time rehearsing and practicing this. And of course, if possible you should introduce this piece as something else and Rick Roll your audience - I usually say we are playing a theme from Symphony in G my Mozart. Enjoy this piece!
