Although I am today a cellist (and guitarist), my first instrument was violin, then recorder, and I started cello at the age of 9. I still play every now and then violin, in particular i find improvising on the violin easier then on any other instrument!

Respighi did not attempt to exactlly use bird sounds - with the exception of the cuckoo of course. He took music from the 17th century and re-set them as modern pieces. This would be for an advanced ensemble.

Although the tune has several verses, the orchestration here gradually grows to mimic the original. The guitar, of course, cannot mimic the endless sustain of the pipe organ, so I have made the setting a little more guitar-like with arpeggios and with extra movement in the harmony lines, so that there is an illusion of much more sustain. A listen to the sound-file alongside the music for sale should show that the result is restful and fun to play.Dynamics are suggested that mirror the original (with choir, organ and full orchestra) but the fingering are yours to choose - just make sure you make the performance yours...I hope you enjoy performing this!

The Maple Leaf Rag is an early work by the African-American ragtime composer, Scott Joplin.  It was first published in 1899, although Joplin had been performing it for some years prior to this.  The composer was confident that the work would be a commercial success and, indeed, in due course, royalties from the piece provided him with a stable income for life. Joplin wanted The Maple Leaf Rag performed at his funeral.  His widow opted not to honour this request, feeling that the music was stylistically inappropriate for such a sad occasion – a decision she later regretted.This arrangement for mixed woodwind quartet of 2 flutes, oboe and either clarinet or bassoon is pretty challenging, both in terms of technique and stamina, hence its classification as 'advanced intermediate'.  If desired, players could opt to finish at the change of key at letter F, rather than performing the complete piece.

Rudy Volkmann #6073867. Published by Rudy Volkmann (A0.1005641). The William Wallace Gilchrist Piano Trio in G Minor is a monumental, and historically significant work. In 1990, while chairman of the music department of Paine College, I spent a week doing research on a project in the Philadelphia Free Library.   In the course of that project, I stumbled upon an unpublished major chamber piece by one of America’s first homegrown Romantic composers, William Wallace Gilchrist (1846-1916).  The find was a vellum (ink on onion skin) working score and parts - working score in that there were changes made on the pages (assumed to be in the composer’s own handwriting) of Gilchrist’s first piano trio. I had other projects at hand, so it was 2005 before I finished editing and annotating the score and parts, presented here.  I encourage the reader to refer to the editorial notes in preparing this piece for performance.
