Piano Trio,String Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1005641 Composed by William Wallace Gilchrist. Arranged by Rudy Volkmann. Romantic Period. Score and parts. 186 pages. Rudy Volkmann #6073867. Published by Rudy Volkmann (A0.1005641). The William Wallace Gilchrist Piano Trio in G Minor is a monumental, and historically significant work. In 1990, while chairman of the music department of Paine College, I spent a week doing research on a project in the Philadelphia Free Library.   In the course of that project, I stumbled upon an unpublished major chamber piece by one of America’s first homegrown Romantic composers, William Wallace Gilchrist (1846-1916).  The find was a vellum (ink on onion skin) working score and parts - working score in that there were changes made on the pages (assumed to be in the composer’s own handwriting) of Gilchrist’s first piano trio. I had other projects at hand, so it was 2005 before I finished editing and annotating the score and parts, presented here.  I encourage the reader to refer to the editorial notes in preparing this piece for performance.

Cello,Double Bass,Flute,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.576981 Composed by David Warin Solomons. 20th Century,Contemporary,Multicultural,World. 27 pages. David Warin Solomons #566727. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576981). Westerly is inspired by the old English folk song Westron Wynde and by the Renaissance masses based on that folk song It is an expanded version of Celebration originally written for James Pellerite and his North American Native flute [NAF] In order to make the piece accessible to a wider range of performers this version uses a concert flute, with wider range and with just a few of the NAF decorations, and the violin solo part has also been expanded, resulting in a miniature Double Concerto.  Westerly uses four distinct themes and weaves them into a joyful whole. The flute soloist introduces himself with the traditional call of the North American Native flute (a repeated minor third phrase), which reappears from time to time in the rest of the piece, and then embarks upon a sort of jig in E flat major (second theme). The violin soloist copies these flute phrases but then introduces the third theme of the work in the related key of C minor, and the string orchestra comes in.  This third tune is based on the old Westron Wynde melody but it uses an unusual rhythm (3 3 2) and the excitement gradually begins to mount.  So the two soloists rhapsodise on the various tunes and permutations along with the orchestral strings, mixing the various tunes together.  In due course the fourth theme comes in, and it is quite surprising how it fits in with the E flat major - C minor interplay, since it is merely a 12 tone row. It follows some of the traditions of the 20th Century atonal composers, but, due to the context in which it is set, it takes on a warmth seldom found in atonal music.

Mandolin - Digital Download SKU: A0.1017685 Composed by Gordon Jackson. Baroque,Classical,Folk,World. Score. 16 pages. Gordon Jackson #6498403. Published by Gordon Jackson (A0.1017685). Suite in D MinorThe Baroque period in music lasted from approximately the end of the sixteenth century to about the middle of the eighteenth, culminating most famously in the works of Bach and Handel. The suite was a short collection of stylised dance tunes, sometimes (but not here) preceded by a prelude. The suite typically comprised the dances allemande, courante, sarabande, and gigue, to which others may be added. I have added a bourrée and a minuet. Although this is arranged for two mandolins, other instruments can of course be used. I have added a line of mandolin tablature for those who don’t read standard notation. (Actually, I don’t read tablature myself – I used my favourite notation program, Harmony Assistant, to write the score, and it very kindly created the tablature for me!)As a performer of mostly traditional folk tunes, I am driven first by melody, then rhythm, and only then by harmony. For each of these pieces, the melody came first, keeping to the strict rhythmic imperatives of each dance form. Only then were counterpoints added. In this score, the only dance to be repeated is the minuet. Here, the first time through is played on a single mandolin, with rather a lot of double stopping. On the second time through the first mandolin sticks to the basic melody, while the second mandolin plays a counterpoint. Some may recognise the opening bar of the bourrée; it was inspired by a tune by Turlough Ó Carolan (1670-1738) entitled The Princess Royal. The rest, however, is mine!

Instrumental Duet Bassoon,Clarinet,Instrumental Duet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.956612 Composed by J Strauss II. Arranged by Catriona Melville-Mason. Concert,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and parts. 7 pages. C Melville-Mason #6477751. Published by C Melville-Mason (A0.956612). In his lifetime, Austrian composer Johann Strauss II (1825 – 1899) was dubbed ‘The Waltz King’, reflecting his prolific output of this type of dance music.  He also composed polkas, quadrilles, marches, operettas and a ballet. During the 1848 upheavals in the Austrian Empire, Johann II opted to side with the revolutionaries.  This allegiance had an adverse effect on his career, as well as deepening the rift between him and his father, so in due course Johann wrote several marches with titles that might encourage the establishment to forget his past pro-revolutionary sympathies. The Ottinger Reiter-Marsch was first published in 1850.  Strauss claimed that the work had been commissioned for a regiment who specifically requested the dedication to General Franz von Ottinger.  At the time, Ottinger was not very popular, largely because of his punitive attitude towards former revolutionaries. This arrangement for mixed woodwind duo of B-flat clarinet and bassoon is suitable for players of ABRSM Grade 4 - 5 standard and above.
