Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.1071551). This MP3 is a high-quality recording of the orchestral part for On the Seashore of Endless Worlds by Colin Kirkpatrick. The work is scored for soprano solo, SATB choir and orchestra.  The vocal and choral parts have been omitted entirely from this recording. It is not of course intended to replace the orchestra but would be useful for choir directors who want to get an idea of the orchestral sound in advance. The MP3 could be used as a backing track for a small group of singers assuming the audio equipment is of sufficient standard. For this reason, in the two short a cappella sections, a discreet metronome sound has been added to keep the singers in sync with the recording.  The choral score is available separately from SMP as is the full orchestral score and instrumental parts. The Baritone part in the quintet can be substituted with bass guitar (additional part included), thus allowing the piece to be performed by a sax quartet with bass guitar and drums. It has been carefully designed to work within the resources of players at about grade 5 and above (ABRSM), depending of course on tempo setting. The courage of those fighting men is legendary. I arranged this for my French choir. Based in Normandy, this has special poignance for local people, who owe their freedom to those warriors, and for whom these are their fields, their beaches. Annual commemoration events here in Normandy are extraordinarily moving, and happen in every town down to the smallest village, often attended by families of the men who fought on that day. (We sang it in French, of course - Le Jour le Plus Long - let me know if anyone wants this arrangement with the French words.) If you don't have enough singers to split the parts, sing the upper note.

Many scholarly, and some frankly impenetrable, analyses have been written on the subject of Contrapunctus 7, all available on the internet somewhere (mainly if you can't sleep!). So I would simply say that the motif throughout is stretched, further elongated, scrunched up, placed on different beats, played upsidedown, sideways, shortened, further shortened, over the bar, under the bar, off to the bar(!), and so on, it shouldn't work!! But of course it really does, really! I've known this piece for many years, but it was not until I began unravelling it for this Clarinet version that I must again doff my cap to old J.S. and his enduring genius!

This arrangement consists of two parts which can be played either seperately, or consecutively: the famous “Air On The G String� (BWV 1068, as in the 1871 arrangement by August Wilhemj), inspired by Jaques Loussier´s “Play Bach�- version (hence the video link), and the fugue c-minor from the Well-Tempered Piano (BWV 847), inspired by the magnificent Turtle Island String Quartet´s incomparable swinging rendition. There are several options of playing this arrangement: “Air� has two parts which can be repeated – thus, violin1 and cello can distribute the theme. Of course, these repetitions are optional. If you want to play the Air only – there is an optional ending in bar 22. If you want to play only the fugue – start from bar 23 (intro), or from bar 30 (theme). Or you choose to play Air and fugue consecutively. The arrangement works great either ways ;-). Piano voice is written out. However, there are also chord symbols for your own voicings. Minimal instrumentation: piano trio (violin1, cello, piano). Comes with full score and all individual parts. Optional voices for violin 2 and bass, clarinet Bb, guitar, and drums included. The editing is simplified in some places for easier play and substantially follows the print of an edition of Breitkopf & Härtel from the year 1926.
