I said great, how about a work based solely on the waltz for clarinet, violin, cello and piano? She said that would be fabulous. So, it immediately reminded me that one of my favorite works by Maurice Ravel is his solo piano work, Valses nobles et sentimentales. It was interesting and revelatory to find out (from Wikipedia, of course) that Ravel was in turn inspired by Schubert's collection of waltzes entitled Valses nobles and Valses sentimentales. My quartet is in eight movements, as is the Ravel. The title of my work, Vanessa, is an acronym of sorts to the Ravel title, Valses nobles et sentimentales. I. Modéré - très franc II. Assez lent - avec une expression intense III. Modéré IV.
