This is a programmatic piece for clarinet and piano based on 1 John 4:1-6, in which the apostle John warns the early church to discern the true spirit of God from false spirits of the antichrist. In the beginning, the soloist introduces the God melody, a pure and simple line. The next section, depicting the false spirits, takes this melody and turns it into what starts as cutesy and endearing, but ends up into an awkward and chaotic mess. God asserts Himself in the next section, bringing the chaos to a halt. Then, the false spirits try to steal the spotlight again, but they fail, of course. The Lord always triumphs, and His sheep know their Shepherd when they hear His voice. About 6 minutes long, written in fall 2018. .

Slow Sunday is a lovely duet and country waltz that tells the lifelong tale of a couple whose love is challenged by the rigamarole of work and other distractions from focusing on the relationship. In the first verse, the man admits he has been drawn off course by work and other busy life responsibilities, and the woman follows by confessing her concerns and desire to start a family. The third verse is a violin instrumental that symbolizes the couple's new focus once again on love and family, and, in the fourth verse, the now aged couple looks back on a successful life of love and child rearing. This duet leaves the artistic choice to the singers as to which one sings the higher part, especially given the singers' own knowledge of their voices, blend, and the prevailing artistic context. The duet lasts about seven and a half minutes, and would be a fun, satisfying singing experience for two voices in the vein of Faith Hill and Tim McGraw. Slow Sunday would be a lovely choice for a couple's first waltz at their wedding.

Does his curious nature take him inside to explore the unknown, with a possibility of finding food or a safe place to live or does he go back and find his way back home? This lively Sea Shanty Medley is a combination of two different sea shanties, Fish in the Sea from Scotland and Santiana from the Americas.Fish in the Sea is quite simple but has dozens of verses. It takes the form of a chorus that is identical every time and a verse that describes various fish. The idea being that everyone would sing the chorus and each individual sailor would basically ad-lib new lyrics when it was their turn to sing a verse.Santiana actually tells the story of the Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna during the Mexican-American war in the 1840s. However, the various exploits described in the song have very little to do with historical reality. There are of course dozens of version of the song, each associated with different shipping lanes, and there are even a wide variety of shanties from other countries that seem to be adaptations of this tune with different stories.This arrangement by Mark Lewis is for 3 to 5 octave handbell choir and makes extensive use of both malleted and normal ringing techniques. There are some very quick transitions between the two techniques. The piece moves along at a pretty good clip with some portions in 6/8 and others in cut time with various duplet and triplet patterns to help with transitions, leading to a difficulty rating of 4+. While the piece should be playable by most intermediate groups, they will definitely need to put in enough practice time to perform it properly.Season: ConcertRange: 3-5 octaves.
