A well known French Noel (Quand Jesus naquit à Noël) from the Baroque era, arranged by many of the big French Baroque composers like Balastre and Beauvarlet-Charpentier. It is also a very populair Christmas song in The Netherlands (Midden in de Winternacht). I made an accessible Basse de Trompette over this beautiful melodie. However it’s written in C major however it requires some skills to play the solo with the left hand. A lovely tune as a prelude or any other occasion around Christmas. And of course, you can sing the the words on this one as well.

A set of warm-ups intended for an elementary through early intermediate piano student who needs to play one-handed for a while.  (Amazing how often piano students break an arm.)  While I call this for Left Hand Only, I also of course use it for students who temporarily have use of only the right arm, as well.  All four scales also call for the student to name the key, and there is a challenge to play each scale in other keys, as well, giving a nice work-out for a student who is temporarily frustrated by not being able to play their usual rep.  My students also enjoy composing their own one-handed scales after having learned these.

The arrangement of this classic jazz/blues/cabaret song is based on the earliest (1937) of (at least?) three recordings by the late, great Billie Holliday, and is closer in feel to the original French version, as sung by cabaret and movie star, Mistinguett. Of course, the most famous version (and most closely associated with Holliday) is the one recorded by Billie in the '50s; but, I like to think that this uptempo version is a truer reflection of this great singer - in happier times - when she loved to sing uptempo jazz (she never regarded herself as a blues singer, although she could sing the blues with the best of them! And, it's important to reflect that her most famous interpretation of this song was made when she was - tragically - at death's door, and blues was better suited to her mood, and a deeply-felt despair, at this time of her all too brief, and, ultimately tragic, life). Besides, the uptempo rhythms, I feel, lend the words more of a 'Brechtian' sense of irony and impact.
