This lively Sea Shanty Medley is a combination of two different sea shanties, Fish in the Sea from Scotland and Santiana from the Americas.Fish in the Sea is quite simple but has dozens of verses. It takes the form of a chorus that is identical every time and a verse that describes various fish. The idea being that everyone would sing the chorus and each individual sailor would basically ad-lib new lyrics when it was their turn to sing a verse.Santiana actually tells the story of the Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna during the Mexican-American war in the 1840s. However, the various exploits described in the song have very little to do with historical reality. There are of course dozens of version of the song, each associated with different shipping lanes, and there are even a wide variety of shanties from other countries that seem to be adaptations of this tune with different stories.This arrangement by Mark Lewis is for 3 to 5 octave handbell choir and makes extensive use of both malleted and normal ringing techniques. There are some very quick transitions between the two techniques. The piece moves along at a pretty good clip with some portions in 6/8 and others in cut time with various duplet and triplet patterns to help with transitions, leading to a difficulty rating of 4+. While the piece should be playable by most intermediate groups, they will definitely need to put in enough practice time to perform it properly.Season: ConcertRange: 3-5 octaves.

Teresa Carreño (1853 – 1917) was a Venezuelan pianist, soprano, composer, and conductor. Over the course of her 54-year concert career, she became an internationally renowned virtuoso pianist and was often referred to as the Valkyrie of the Piano. Carreño also frequently performed the works of Norwegian composer and pianist Edvard Grieg (1843–1907). Shecomposed approximately 75 works for solo piano, voice and piano, choir and orchestra, and instrumental ensemble. Several composers dedicated their compositions to Carreño, including Amy Beach and Edward MacDowell.

Evocative piano solo for Early Intermediate (2nd, 3rd year piano).One of my favorite moments as a piano teacher was discovering Night Train by Chris Goldston in that great collection of Alfred's called Contest Winners, in this case Vol. 2. I'll never forget turning to the second page of this moody A minor piece and finding the Bb Lydian, D minor, and E Phrygian passages. That piece is magic, and most of my students would confirm that. The A minor return has a sublime little twist, which was one of the inspirations for indicating hand positions larger than just 5 steps by means of a V. And, of course the final chord is probably the first time the student has ever heard, much less played, the sound of stacked 4ths (because they're probably not yet listening to Coltrane and McCoy Tyner). Skye Boat Song (Over the Sea to Skye) An intermediate-level woodwind arrangement of this favourite Scottish melody, featuring Horn in E-flat or F.  The tune may be familiar to some as the theme from Outlander. The piece is scored for the following: ·        Part 1: Flute ·        Part 2: Oboe ·        Part 3: Clarinet in B-flat ·        Part 4: Clarinet in B-flat ·        Part 5: Clarinet in B-flat ·        Part 6: Bassoon OR Part 6: Bass Clarinet in B-flat ·        Part 7: Tenor Horn in E-flat (Alto Sax) OR Part 7: Horn in F (Cor Anglais) This arrangement was originally created for a small wind course at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig on the Isle of Skye, with 1 – 2 players per part and featuring E-flat horn. There are some alternative options for the feature part – the version in E-flat could instead by played by Alto Saxophone, while there is also a version in F which could be played by French Horn or Cor Anglais. Also included are optional easier ‘add-on’ parts for Flute/Oboe, Clarinet in B-flat/Soprano Saxophone, Low Clarinet in B-flat, Tenor Saxophone, Mini-bassoon (in F or G) and Bassoon – ideal if your group contains a few less-adept players.  These should be used sparingly, however!
