The Big Barn refers to the Gaelic College, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig (The Great Barn of Ostaig), on the Isle of Skye where this tune finally saw the light of day after rattling around for some time.  After a course on traditional Scottish piano accompaniment in 1997 I was allowed to spent a couple of days in the peace of the original barn itself writing out various tunes, of which this was one.  More recently I extended the original composition and entered the piece into the Aberdeen Strathspey and Reel Society composition competition where it won joint first prize.  This might be described as a slow reel so do not feel you need to play it at a pace.

It sounds fuller with Alto 2 of course (Alto 2 could actually be sung by higher tenor voices, as it goes up to the A above middle C) The Bass part is pretty easy and optional, but it supports the overall sound. Not really suitable for a complete beginners 4 part choir, as the Alto parts are quite complex in places and the harmonies are often very close together. A tone higher than the original.
