Firefly Elegy uses a 12-note melodic theme, which through the course of the piece undergoes a series of transformations - mirroring the metamorphosis that takes place over a firefly's brief life span. The piece comprises four sections that reflect the four life stages of the firefly. During the motionless egg stage, some types of fireflies glow dimly; the opening section of the piece (following a short fanfare of flashing-light) is likewise static and calm, while at the same time features an internal motion hinting at subdued energy. The following groovy section is at times aggressive, not unlike the firefly during its larva stage, when it is hunting and digesting insects using special enzymes.  The firefly hibernates through the pupa stage - reflected in the third section of the piece by seemingly everlasting sustained chords in the strings. Like a flash of light, each new phrase begins with an ascending scale, while the harp provides groups of repeated notes, recalling the synchronized flashes that are found in groups of tropical fireflies. Firefly Elegy ends with an elegy in which the now mature firefly looks back at its life. It has gone through such an extensive journey but only long enough to mate and lay eggs, sometimes without feeding during its adult stage. In the summertime, I often watch the firefly in his lonely flutter, flashing about and looking for a mate so he can complete the sole purpose of his short life before dying away. He must sometimes look back and wonder: was it all worth it?

I have used as the base material in different ways; sometimes quoting directly (Agnus Dei), sometimes using the melodic intervals to create the movement (Sanctus).The text is in English; from the Episcopalian Book of Common Prayer. Each movement is short and the counterpoint is kept to a minimum for clarity of text. It is appropriate for church services; the piece is written so one movement can be performed as an indivicual work.In a concert setting, it of course may be performed complete. There is no Credo movement; that was a decision on my part, as singing the Credo in the Episcopalian service (or Anglican) is not usual.

I was thinking about all the ways in which we could not breathe in 2020 - George Floyd's last words, the COVID-19 pandemic putting us all on masks and respirators, the wildfires filling our homes with smoke, the racism that has silenced so many for so long. I thought it would be interesting to write a piece with all that in mind for flute, an instrument which is, of course, all about breathing.  The piece is one movement with four sections: George Floyd, Protests, Respirators, and Wildfires. It runs approximately 9 to 10 minutes, at the performer’s discretion. It requires some improvisation, a few special effects (multiphonics, use of voice, jet whistle), some serious breath control, and a lot of energy. The performer is asked to breathe in specific ways, to make the audience aware of the breathing, and to become uncomfortably short of breath.  There is also optional use of electronic Loop for layering voices in the final section.This piece was premiered by Anthony Trionfo at the National Flute Association convention, Aug. 4, 2023.  Check out the Youtube link for an exciting performance.This is an intensely emotional piece and unlike my other compositions. When you think of jazz bands, who doesn't think of Franz Schubert [1797-1828].  Normal people, right?  When listening to both his Trout Quintet and his Lied named The Trout, I thought if Schubert can use this melody multiple times, would it also work as the basis of a jazz band chart?  This is the result: am up tempo swing chart that is both fun and playable.  The chart overall is Grade 2 with solos a grade harder for Alto, Trumpet, Trombone, and Piano which, of course, can be altered to match the level of your players.

Score and parts. 24 pages. Mark Lansom #705862. Published by Mark Lansom (A0.1102450). This arrangement was written for a school ensemble with violins at three distinct levels of ability. The first violin part is almost identical to the original, with occasional easing. The second violin part maintains as much of the original as possible too, but without having to leave first position. The third violin part was designed for players towards the end of their first year of lessons, and remains in first hand shape of tone-tone-semitone from each string. The cello part was adapted to avoid the slightly awkward F sharp stretch on the C string, which often leads young cellists out of tune. However, there is a second supplementary score and parts which use the original cello notes. Other supplementary parts include a fourth violin part which is all open strings, a viola part which doubles mostly second violin but sometimes first or third violin to stop the line leaving first position, and a double bass part. Minimum forces for a performance are the first three violin parts with at least one bass clef part (which could also of course be played on a keyboard). Inevitably, the piece loses its purity of being an actual canon of parts, but gains playability. It is almost as long as the original, but some cuts have been made, so it is inadvisable to add parts from other sources. Finally, the piece has been made much easier to read by being written in double time.
