This lively Sea Shanty Medley is a combination of two different sea shanties, Fish in the Sea from Scotland and Santiana from the Americas.Fish in the Sea is quite simple but has dozens of verses. It takes the form of a chorus that is identical every time and a verse that describes various fish. The idea being that everyone would sing the chorus and each individual sailor would basically ad-lib new lyrics when it was their turn to sing a verse.Santiana actually tells the story of the Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna during the Mexican-American war in the 1840s. However, the various exploits described in the song have very little to do with historical reality. There are of course dozens of version of the song, each associated with different shipping lanes, and there are even a wide variety of shanties from other countries that seem to be adaptations of this tune with different stories.This arrangement by Mark Lewis is for 3 to 5 octave handbell choir and makes extensive use of both malleted and normal ringing techniques. There are some very quick transitions between the two techniques. The piece moves along at a pretty good clip with some portions in 6/8 and others in cut time with various duplet and triplet patterns to help with transitions, leading to a difficulty rating of 4+. While the piece should be playable by most intermediate groups, they will definitely need to put in enough practice time to perform it properly.Season: ConcertRange: 3-5 octaves.

This is a beautiful rendition of the familiar chant, keeping the intent of early chant and choral sound, but within a more contemporary harmonic palette.  It begins simply and ends in a very uplifting, positive manner, with several transpositions along the way.  However, the feeling of plainchant is always present in each variation as they evolve.  This is the first of what I hope to be a collection of hymn arrangements for choir that follow the Christian Church Year, this one being Advent season.  Of course it can be sung anytime that fits the situation, but I used the United Methodist Hymnal suggestion for an Advent hymn.  The piano simulates bells and chimes, and the voices sometimes do also.  A very uplifting arrangement, while not so difficult as to discourage choirs.  It employs the concept of canon and contemporary harmonies.  I hope you and your choir or choral organization enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Of course, all 3 verses of O Sacred Head may be performed first, which increases the performance time to approximately 6 or 7 minutes.

Twenty-six Preludeswas composed for Holly Roadfeldt between September 2013 and April 2014. Unlike the famous preludes by composers like Bach, Chopin, and Debussy, mine are not organized by key. Instead, they are organized by threads: compositional ideas that are developed over the course of the entire set. Composing the set in this manner allowed me to develop several ideas concurrently with the idea that they would in some way merge together by the end of the set, giving the several disparate ideas a real reason to exist together in the same set. In addition, because I was not using key as a resource, I was not constrained by the number 24. The end result is a cycle of preludes that is in some ways more closely related to a Schubertian song cycle than to the Preludes of Chopin, Bach, or Debussy. That is not to say that there is not a close conceptual connection with the Preludes of those masters (there are subtle references to each of those composers in the score), but my intention was to treat the Preludes in a cyclical fashion rather than, as is the case with Bach and Chopin, an exploration of the nuances of the 24 keys. The preludes were not composed in the order that they are presented. Some of them came in quick bunches: two or three in a day; others took longer. In addition to developing the compositional threads, I was interested in creating a wide range of moods that also held together as a set.
