There is some evidence to support that some portions of the lyrics appeared in a poem of Robert Burns, the Scottish poet, . Other tunes from the mid 18th century where traces of this tune can be found in the tunes, Nid Noddin, The Whigs are Rinnen, General Scott asleep and quartz on the brain (we're all cranky, mad, mad, cranky)..
