Treat People With Kindness The idea of this arrangement was to make it as accessible as possible for all playing standards, and singers, and lots of percussion! Treat People With Kindness is a song by British singer and songwriter Harry Styles, recorded for his second album Fine Line (2019). It was used in the 2022 M&S Christmas Advert, which my youth band, Kearsley Youth Brass Band was honoured to be part of, and inspired me to do this arrangement. This fun and easy arrangement is suitable for any ensemble, but a brass band is what I had in mind. The choir arrangement works alongside, or on its own too. I composed my second guitar sonata in 2010. Guitar Sonata No. 2 in C major is six pages long, has two movements, and its estimated performance time is 8:30 to 9:00. The first movement, Inner Visions & Power Puffs, is a zippy sonata form opening with a 12-bar blues Theme 1. After a conventional modulating transition Theme 2 appears in the traditional key of G major. The title of the movement alludes to the Stevie Wonder album Innervisions and, of course, the Powerpuff Girls. The sonata form has a climax by way of three Bartok pizzicati on the dominant pedal to depict the girls defeating Mojo Jojo and putting him in jail.  The second movement is a lullaby with variations. The lullaby is an original song I used to sing for one of my nieces to help her fall asleep. The complete sonata has been recorded by Daniel Estrem and is available on the Magnatune release Estrem Plays Lawson.http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/estrem-estremlawson/I played movement 1 at a Seattle Classic Guitar Society open mic in 2012 on a warm summer Friday night and there were kids playing and screaming in the background, which helped set the mood of the sonata rather than break it.

The piece is a riff on Beethoven's famous Für Elise. Radiant Jewel was composed in 2015 and is dedicate to the composer’s niece, Loïe Ann Gilbert. Composed in 2014, Seabiscuit’s Run is an homage to the champion racehorse. A small horse, Seabiscuit had an inauspicious start to his racing career, but became an unlikely champion and a symbol of hope to many Americans during the Great Depression.  His career culminated in the 1938 Match of the Century against War Admiral at Pimlico Race Course. War Admiral was the favorite but Seabiscuit won by four lengths, and Seabiscuit was named American Horse of the Year for 1938.

This arrangement came to me over a number of weeks in a very organic way that began with the ostinato piano figure that prevails throughout the piece. I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll. One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea� over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them. Somewhere beyond the seaShe’s there watching for me…It’s far beyond the starsIt’s near beyond the moon And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,� and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.� It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan. Performance Suggestions: The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables� and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson and Sara Gazarek improvise on ballads for inspiration.
