Dante Alighieri is of course a major Italian poet.  But the story of his youthful infatuation with Beatrice caught my eyes.  I got his book La Vita Nuova in a dual language edition published by Dover and proceeded to look for the right set of poems for my setting.  There are four long poems that I found beautiful and fabulous, but I ended up using only portions of the first three.  Even so the song cycle is quite ling, at 26 minutes.   The work is set for tenor and piano.  Ethan DePuy who has done my work previously will record Beatrice in the studio of the New England Conservatory in the spring off 2020.

Published by Beka Wilson (A0.1465285). I had a burr under my saddle to write a Celtic-sounding wedding song using the familiar fourth interval we hear at the beginning of Here Comes the Bride. Of course, playing with this in Dorian produced a lovely, rich melody and harmony, but further experimentation led me to a lighter-toned version of that same melody in Mixolydian. Thus, the idea of separating the song into Groom and Bride sections was born. Each section is ABA format, with the same A part in the respective modes, but their B part differs slightly. The third section (the Couple) utilizes the Groom's A part and the Bride's B part, symbolizing how a man and woman unite their lives as part of their wedding vows.Level: intermediateLength: 3 to 3.5 minutes, depending on tempo.
