This is a beautiful rendition of the familiar chant, keeping the intent of early chant and choral sound, but within a more contemporary harmonic palette.  It begins simply and ends in a very uplifting, positive manner, with several transpositions along the way.  However, the feeling of plainchant is always present in each variation as they evolve.  This is the first of what I hope to be a collection of hymn arrangements for choir that follow the Christian Church Year, this one being Advent season.  Of course it can be sung anytime that fits the situation, but I used the United Methodist Hymnal suggestion for an Advent hymn.  The piano simulates bells and chimes, and the voices sometimes do also.  A very uplifting arrangement, while not so difficult as to discourage choirs.  It employs the concept of canon and contemporary harmonies.  I hope you and your choir or choral organization enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

It would be an ideal piece for the teacher to teach some theory too, introducing chords such as major, minor, 6ths and 7ths. Of course, it would also be a fun piece for the pupil to enjoy in the lead up to the holidays! This arrangement is in the key of F major, features single notes in the left hand and up to four-note chords in the right, dynamics, some simple syncopation per hand, and notes across the treble and bass clefs including some leger lines. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1414066). So the legend goes: Edward Eugene Bagley is on a train, touring with his family band from some Vermont backwater, when he composed National Emblem. He didn't like the ending he wrote, so he trashed the score. Someone in his band rescued it from the trash can. The rest of the band repaired to the baggage car (surely beer was involved in this activity) and secretly rehearsed the new march. They performed it at the band's next concert. It became the most famous (as in, the only one you've ever heard of) of Bagley's compositions and one of the most recognizable American marches. John Phillip Sousa ranked it among the top four in that category, surrounding it, of course, with his own marches. Its trio is regularly played at colors ceremonies. It even pops up in the TubaChristmas version of Jingle Bells. He sold the rights to the arrangement for $25.

The subtitle 'Variants' was perhaps rather apt with the Covid-19 pandemic ongoing during the symphony's composition. The initial idea on the violas provides the thematic basis for the entire Symphony, with various aspects of the initial idea being continually varied throughout the course of the work. Unusually for me the Symphony ends loudly almost brashly. The Symphony is scored for a large symphony orchestra and is around 28 minutes in duration.Parts can be supplied upon request.
