At the beginning of the sixties, he wrote his memories of this time under the title of Mauthausen. In 1965, he also wrote four poems on the subject and gave me the opportunity to set them to music. I did this with much pleasure, firstly, because I liked the poetry of the texts, and secondly, because I myself was detained in Italian and German prisons during the Nazi occupation, but mainly because this composition gives us the chance to remind the younger generation of history, of events that must never be forgotten. First and foremost, of course, the Mauthausen Cantata is addressed to all those who suffered under Fascism and fought against it. We must keep the Nazi crimes continually in our minds, because that is the only guarantee and the only way to assure that they are not repeated. And we can see every day that the ghost of Fascism is far from being laid. It seldom shows its real face, but Fascist cultures and mentalities exist all over the world. For us, who had to live through this time of horror, the most important task is to protect our children against this peril. (Mikis Theodorakis, 1999).

They could play everything else, except the 6/8 rhythms. So, the musicteacher in me made the difficult decision to remove the United States Air Force Song from the finalarrangement, and thus, making it more playable for a developing band.

They first performed it at a Double Reed Society Day at Trinity College of Music. Later I wrote the clarinet choir version for a wind course in Scotland, & there are also a saxophone ensemble version, and mixed wind ensemble versions. The title 'Permutations' describes a piece in which all the parts are of equal importance, and play together in various different combinations, or 'Permutations'. The first movement contains some quite dynamic themes, the 2nd is more calm and pensive, but both contain contrasting passages. The 3rd movement - the 'Salsa' is full of exuberance and fun, but with some short contrasting passages in which the various instruments strut their stuff.

However, the piece took on much more of a fantasia feel and shape as I wrote it and it could be argued that a second theme first heard in the violin of the ground (derived from material in bar 5) becomes more dominant than the first as the piece progresses. The piece is in one continuous movement but is in three distinct sections and tempi: medium, slow and fast. The material shares some similarities with my piano trio, Nightswimming, and in some ways can be seen as a companion piece (minus the cello of course). The title comes from a track on an album by the artist St. Vincent called Marry Me which I hope is appropriate for a piece commissioned to celebrate a wedding anniversary.Joe Duddell 2010.
