Ignaz Pleyel (1757-1831) was at one time the most famous composer in the world. The popularity of his music eclipsed that of even his teacher Haydn and publishers vied to bring out his latest works as soon as they were finished. Some 2000 separate prints of Pleyel works had appeared by 1800 and his fame extended to every corner of Europe and as far afield as North America. Pleyel's career as a composer spanned less than thirty years with the majority of his works composed in the 1780s.

He founded a successful publishing house in Paris in the mid-1790s and later began manufacturing keyboard instruments. With increasing demands on his time from his business concerns Pleyel's productivity as a composer dropped sharply and he ceased composing around 1805. Pleyel wrote very little solo keyboard music preferring instead to compose accompanied sonatas (i.e. piano trios).

The attractive Rondeau in E flat (Benton 613), suitable for performance by either harp or fortepiano, illustrates many of Pleyel's strengths as a composer. It is attractive, technically resourceful and unerring in its sense of dramatic pace. Its principal theme is lively and distinctive, not too difficult technically and yet rewarding to play. The principal theme and the episodic material are elegantly constructed and reveal a sensitivity to the tone colour of the instrument.

The minore section is dramatic and the octave doublings lend it a strength and power which contrasts effectively with the gentle rondeau theme. The final episode, the most technically challenging, adds a thrilling touch of drama to the closing phase of the piece.

Descensus ad Infero is a thriller two piano duet. As such this is a powerful passionate piece with much boldness, dissonance, and angst. There is a driving pulse that is vehement and at times unpleasant and even frenetic because one's descent into the abyss has been adjudged for a life lived accordingly. Piano 1 and Piano 2 trade off on motifs and dynamic changes. Note the melodic motifs that warrant greater emphasis throughout the piece. This piece is rather accessible for the advanced intermediate student. This score would also work well as music for thriller, horror, and/or suspense films.

2 pianos Study Score of Tapayawi The following description is from the full score: Tapayawi - Concerto for Piano and Strings Orchestra in 3 movements.Estimated performance time: 19'45 Tapayawi� comes from Nahuatl and means “rain constantly.� Each one of the movements portrays a scene with rain in different environments. The work has 3 short movements and is dedicated to Dr. Esteban Barquero, a conductor and dear friend from Costa Rica. The first movement “Bajo la lluvia� (Under the Rain) represents the juvenile experience of doing different activities under the rain like playing, running, and dancing. I have memorable memories of my childhood under the intense rain. The experience of being in the rain can be funny or stressful depending on your perspective. The music pretends to be ambiguous, presenting the theme in different tonal centers and moving between different intensities until fading in the rain.“Rocio� (Dew) is the second movement of the piece. The slow music pretends to evoke a relaxing morning in the countryside enjoying the view of the dew on the green plains. The delicacy of the piano in combination with the warmth of the strings will help to create a relaxing experience for the listener. This movement is like an oasis to the noise of our daily lives.The third movement “Tempestad� (Tempest) is based on a Salvadoran Traditional Rhythm called “Xuc� As an interesting fact, while I was composing this movement I learned that Costa Rica had a traditional rhythm that is very similar called “Tambito.� The movement is full of energy, portraying a Thunderstorm. This movement is very demanding for the performers, especially for the soloist.
