Lament for the Balkans for guitar, strings and mezzo sopranoIs my third work with a concertante attitude towards the guitar. It was premiered in the Corfu Guitar Festival in 1999 under the direction of Theodore Antoniou.The initial idea and inspiration came to me after the tragic events in the former Yugoslavia those years. The guitar has a narrative role while the string orchestra expresses visions of laments here and there. At the work a soprano is heard from almost far a way lamenting the victims of another war.The tragic situation of all wars in this world compels me as a creator and performer to express feelings through my music. For this important reason and with the hope that my music would be able to transfer a message against war and to evoke feelings towards peace, I composed Lament. As a composer, I think that I have the obligation and, at the same time, the right to fight using my weapons against any war that causes violence, abandonment, and misery.

The Skye boat song is an beautiful tune and it sits nicely under the fingers in this guitar sheet music. It is simple but with a number of position changes which is where it’s difficulty level moves into the more intermediate range. This music for guitar probably sits around the Grade 4 mark.This would sit nicely amongst a repertoire of traditional music for recital, exam, or a during a rest period a one a set of traditional Scottish dance or even used as a piece for a waltz.

The way I did this was taking advantage of the harmonic qualities of the guitar, focusing on adding presence and body, without affecting its role as accompaniment.

These are older pieces recently reformulated and edited, and still sound fresh and new to my ears, so I like them and I hope you will too. I have tried to include all fingerings and indications to make them clearer for the performer. Ideally, there should not be anything too challenging in these pieces as it is all attempting to be idiomatic for the guitar - that is the goal, anyway!  - SN 2019
