Counter melodies were added to enhance the arrangement.American composer and Cornet player Herbert L. Clarke was one of the first soloists to combine a pyrotechnic technique with a lush, romantic sound. His virtuoso-with-a-heart' style set the standard for Cornet (and later Trumpet) players for the next several generations. He, along with Jean Baptiste Arban and Frank Simon, is considered to be one of the finest Cornetists in history. Many of Clarke's compositions are still regularly performed, including: 'The Maid of the Mist', 'Sounds of the Hudson', 'The Bride of the Waves', 'Stars in a Velvety Sky', 'From the Shores of the Mighty Pacific', 'The Debutante and Southern Cross'. 'The Maid of the Mist' was composed ca. 1912 and is one of about 50 pieces Clarke wrote to display his virtuosity in concerts. 'Maid of the Mist' is the name of a tourist boat that visitors to Niagara Falls can ride to view the falls up-close.

Music for a While #6410513. Published by Music for a While (A0.914173). Robert Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943) was born in Canada before moving to the Unites States at the age of 11. He began studying piano at an early age and went on to be the first black American to graduate from Oberlin Conservatory of Music.  Throughout his career he worked as a composer, organist, pianist, choral director and music professor; he received many awards for his music and writing and spent a period at the Fontainebleau School of Music south of Paris where he studied with Nadia Boulanger.  Dett became well known for incorporating tunes and and elements of African American folk songs and spirituals into classical music.Cave of the Winds was composed in 1902 whilst Dett was living in Niagara Falls, NY and was first published the same year. The title refers to a natural cavern behind a waterfall at Niagara Falls which existed until 1955.

Babcock lived in Lockport, New York, he took frequent walks along the Niagara Escarpment to enjoy the overlook's panoramic vista of upstate New York scenery and Lake Ontario, telling his wife Katherine he was going out to see the Father's world. He died in 1901 at age 42. Shortly after his death Katherine published a compilation of Babcock's writings entitled Thoughts for Every-Day Living that contained the poem My Father's World. The poem was set to music in 1915 by Franklin L. Sheppard, a close friend of Babcock. The tune name, Terra Beata, means Blessed Earth in Latin.Guitar and voice (Guitar classical or acoustic). He often told his wife that he was “going out to see the Father’s world.� This phrase prompted the title for one of his original poems. His wife published his poems after his death in 1901 (age 42.) ♫ In 1915 Franklin Shepherd, his friend, adapted Babcock’s poem and an English folk tune to create the hymn. Shepherd named the melody TERRA BEATA (Blessed Earth). ♫ The original folk tune appears in the opening notes of the Shire Theme by Howard Shore in the Lord of the Rings Film Series.♫ The last stanza used in this video is seldom found in hymnbooks.
