Opera in 3 acts based on the text by Oscar Wilde. Composed by Gerald Barry. This edition: vocal/piano score. Downloadable, Piano reduction. Duration 90 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q19064. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q19064).

English.

When asked what the theme of his play was, Wilde answered “That we should treat all trivial things in life very seriously, and all serious things in life with a sincere and studied triviality. Gerald Barry’s fifth opera based on the play is genuine comic with a dark heart. The previous four have remarkable libretti, but The Importance of Being Earnest, written in 1894, is all but perfect in its construction, and Barry’s audacious approach triumphantly confounds all expectations. As Barry describes it: The play’s bones are unshatterable. My version is an X-ray of it. The musical references range from Beethoven to Schoenberg, all treated with a reckless panache and impish wit, by turns dazzling, startling and charming the audience.

Carmen Fantasie is a virtuoso showpiece for violin and orchestra. The piece is part of Franz Waxman's score to the 1946 movie Humoresque for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture. The music, based on various themes from Georges Bizet's opera Carmen, was initially meant to be played by Jascha Heifetz. However, he was replaced by a young Isaac Stern for the film's recording of the score. Stern's hands can be seen in the close-up shots from the movie.

After seeing the film, Heifetz asked Waxman to expand the work because he wanted to play it on the radio program, The Bell Telephone Hour, where it premiered on 9 September 1946. The work has been played since by many virtuoso violinists in concerts. This adaption, by The Fluffy Hat Music Co. is for Solo Violin and string ensemble (2 1st Violins, 2 2nd violins, 2 Viola and 2 Cellos).

Programme note

Our old, clunky answer machine would tape a minute of conversation when we didn’t answer the telephone quickly enough. If I picked up using the hands-free function on a different phone, then feedback was recorded over the top of the conversation. I guess even the most trivial of conversations has many layers of meaning, beyond the bare facts being related.
