The Earthling is a short contemporary piano solo written by Franklyn Grace in 2016, while she was still a high school student. In 2017, it was selected as the winner of the Indiana Federation of Music Clubs Junior Composers Contest.

Performance Notes: I have particularly fond memories of The Earthling because I remember it as the first piece I composed that truly helped me believe in myself as a composer. I was inspired to compose The Earthling based on an idea I had for a sci-fi/fantasy story when I was in high school. In the story, the main character is a young girl from the planet Earth, who finds herself transported to a galaxy not her own. This piece serves as her character theme. The ending has been described as throwaway, in comparison to certain works of the French composer Francis Poulenc. I very intentionally crafted this ending to allude to an eerily ethereal feel.

The Bagatelles Chantées is a song cycle based on three poems that I wrote during my two first years in New York City. It is only after my studies at the Juilliard School in 2015 that I decided to set them to music. Each of the songs had to have, like the poems themselves, its distinct style. Accordingly, I came up with the idea of making them - to a certain extent - style studies. In the dedication line under every song title in this edition you will find the name of the composer whose style I gave my best to emulate. The first song, Spleen, is dedicated to Olivier Messiaen. The second song, Silence, is dedicated to Gérard Grisey. The third and last song, La Reine (The Queen), is dedicated to Francis Poulenc.
