Das Orchesterstück Melodien habe ich 1971 komponiert. Ich versuchte, die dichte Mikropolyphonie meiner Musiksprache aufzulockern, transparenter zu machen. Im Grunde genommen blieb ich treu zu meinem früheren Stil: die musikalische Form entfaltet sich wie ein ausgespanntes Gewebe in der kontinuierlich weiterfliessenden Zeit, doch verschmelzen die Einzelstimmen nicht mehr (wie in meiner früheren Musik), vielmehr sind sie in ihrer Überlagerung und Verflechtung einzeln durchhörbar. Die Stimmen werden zu individuellen Melodien, mit eigenem Duktus, eigenem Tempo, Rhythmus und intervallischer Struktur. Hört man das Werk zum ersten Male, erscheint es als ein Chaos diskrepanter Melodien - kennt man aber die Musik besser,werden die internen Zusammenhänge, wird das verborgene harmonische Skelett der Form erfassbar.
