The piece is for a 7-part mixed chamber ensemble of oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, violin, viola, and cello. The instrumentation was originally for single string players, though multiple players can be used. The arrangement aims to convey typical Bartokian timbres, as well as recreating Bartok's contrasting use of the piano; this is both occasionally percussive, and sometimes sustained (due to the use of the right pedal in Bartok's piano piece). This arrangement can also include a pianist playing the original piece on the piano, as the chamber ensemble doubles exaxctly. These pieces have been transcribed from arrangements for flute and guitar. Bela Bartok, considered one of the 20th century’s most important composers, was born in Hungary in 1881. A prodigy, he was a professor at the Budapest Music Academy by the age of 26. His interest in traditional music led him to make many journeys (with his colleague Zolta Kodaly) through Hungary, Romania and Slovakia collecting songs and dances, the styles of which were synthesised into compositions of his own. He emigrated to the USA in 1940 where he died five years later of leukaemia. The pieces are deceptively simple, and it would be a mistake to take their natural forms, clear melodies, tonal harmonies and strong rhythms as an invitation to play inattentively. Quite the contrary. They stand any amount of playing, but only when the composing is heeded, the dynamics observed, and modulations anticipated.

All the developed songs I used in this volume are a little part of the ritualic music of the Romanian children. These little studies are polyphonic and harmonic exercises which are very useful for the young guitarists. The modal structures give to this score a unique flavor and invite the musicians to discover an astonishing music tradition.
