Harald Genzmer (1909-2007) is one of the most important German composers of the 20th century and contributed major works to the church and organ music repertoire. The present solo cantata after the famous 'Song of Brother Sun' by Francis of Assisi ('Most high, all-powerful, all good, Lord!') continues the great tradition of the solo cantata by Schütz, Telemann or Bach, with its theme being the praise of God as creator and protector of Earth. The vocal part is entirely in the service of a text that is interpreted with sensitive musical means. The rewarding organ part contains several solo passages. A valuable addition to the repertoire for religious concerts - marking the 100th birthday of Harald Genzmer on 07.02.2009.

The Hindemith pupil Harald Genzmer (1909–2007) worked with virtually all music genres and composed works for many, even unusual instruments (such as the trautonium). He also wrote compositions for the piano, of course, and in 1938 published a major work, Sonata No. 1. For Richards Laugs who had worked in Mannheim since 1945, first as musical director at the National Theatre, then as director of the local music academy, he wrote '3 Tänze' for piano the autograph of which was discovered among the effects of Laugs' widow only recently. These very enjoyable-to-play and melodious miniatures are published for the first time here.

The wide-ranging oeuvre of Harald Genzmer (1909-2007) is completed by a large number of small-scale chamber music works. In the last stage of his creative life, the flute played a major role. It was in that period that he composed Capriccio notturno for flute or treble recorder and piano, which goes back to his reading Friedrich Nietzsche's Thus Spake Zarathustra whom Genzmer admired very much. Genzmer begins his work with Nachtlied from the second part of Nietzsche's work, using it as a motto. The flute part of Capriccio notturno lies comfortably on the flute, using the possibilities of the treble recorder. In both cases, as in the piano part as well, the demanding musical context requires experienced performers: a work for both the concert stage and upper school classes or youth competitions.

Harald Genzmer composed this Flute Sonata at the suggestion of Dr Peter Hanser-Strecker, Chairman of Schott Music. On 7 November 1999 Genzmer sent it to SMI with the words: I enclose an entirely new sonata for the flute. I have been careful to avoid the problematic areas for the flute: there are no harmonics, no very high or low notes, and so on. I have really enjoyed working on it, and make no secret of the fact that I am very fond of the piece. A rewarding piece for playing in concerts and competitions; well suited to the instrument and imaginatively composed.

Die Kantate Sei nur stille in Gott, meine Seele hat Genzmer in seinem Autograph ausdrücklich als Geistliches Konzert bezeichnet und sich damit in die Tradition von Heinrich Schütz gestellt. Das vierteilige Werk verwendet verschieden Psalmtexte und kann als Gesamtwerk, aber auch in Abschnitten aufgeführt werden. Ausgedehnte Vor- und Zwischenspiele der Orgel setzt er meisterhaft zur Ausdeutung der Texte ein. Verwendet werden die Psalmtexte Sei nur stille, meine Seele, in Gott (Psalm 62, 6-9), Gott, sei mir gnädig (Psalm 51, 3, 12-13), Herr, Gott, du bist unsere Zuflucht (Psalm 90, 1-2,4-6) und Herr, unser Herrscher (Psalm 8, 1, 4-5).

Harald Genzmer’s composition Divertimento di danza for string orchestra clearly continues the baroque form of the divertimento. This light music - in the truest sense of the word - consisted of a sequence of loose movements with free forms and dance movements alternat-ing in varied succession. The divertimento comprised five to six movements. Genzmer kept to all these facts but he brought new life into the old forms. Though he did not compose in the old style, he respected certain rules of the traditional form.

The composer, whose work suits the amateur music-making very much in many respects, succeeded in creating a tonal arrangement that is individual in style. In the first movement, this rhythmically very lively, thematically clearly visible and harmonically interesting though not revolutionary work presents the strings and the solo instruments often entering canonically with an easily remembered -seventh motif; in the second movement, it leads a melody dying away a long time to a dynamic climax, adds harmonic cross relations to a scherzo moving in dance style and closes with a lively vivace movement.“ (Das Liebhaber-orchester).

Harald Genzmer has done a lot for the work with young musicians, and many a string player can recall school orchestra days when Sinfonietta was on the programme quite often. But the probably best-known pupil of Hindemith has written far more of such educational music: all in all, 3 sinfoniettas, apart from collections of simple settings like the eleven Character Pieces for String Orchestra from 1998. They are expressive, entirely songlike miniatures, livened up by two rousing pieces and a pizzicato setting. The pieces can either be played separately or put together into little suites and are ideally suited for school, hobby and amateur orchestras. And despite all educational intentions: It is enjoyable and lively music which is fun to play.

Harald Genzmer has done a great deal for the promotion of young musical talent, and no doubt many a string instrument player can recall from their school orchestra days when his Sinfonietta was on the programme. But this highly prominent Hindemith pupil has written yet more of this educational music: all in all 3 sinfoniettas, in addition to collections of easy movements such as '14 Easy Pieces for String Orchestra' from 2002 which is also suitable for a Streicherschule. The individual movements involve specific styles and demands: cantabile playing, unusual and changing time signatures, bowing, pizzicato, intonation, scale playing, and so forth. The use of a double-bass is ad libitum. The pieces can be played separately or as little suites and are ideal for school and amateur orchestras; and regardless of it's educational nature, this music is lively and fun to play!
