Despite of being ill and forlorn in later life, Mr. Joplin was able to uplift and enhance this period in his  life with this new rag --a kind of self-induced healing potion as he called it. This work and others are currently enjoying a revival in Baltimore via a new musical that reflects this portion of Joplin's life. He maintained to the end that his music is classical in nature and rises above the genre's initial beginnings in barrelhouses and dance halls. .

Scott Joplin composed The Great Crush Collision March in 1896 to commemorate the infamous crash in Crush, Texas. The composition was dedicated to the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railway. The score notably gives direction to the pianist to mimic the sounds of the trains and their whistles right before the collision.
