Hark! The Herald Angels Sing is an English Christmas carol that first appeared in 1739 in the collection Hymns and Sacred Poems. The carol, based on Luke 2:14, tells of an angelic chorus singing praises to God. As it is known in the modern era, it features lyrical contributions from Charles Wesley and George Whitefield, two of the founding ministers of Methodism, with music adapted from Vaterland, in deinen Gauen by Felix Mendelssohn.

Wesley, who had written the original version as Hymn for Christmas-Day, had requested and received slow and solemn music for his lyrics, which has since largely been discarded. Moreover, Wesley's original opening couplet is Hark! how all the welkin rings / Glory to the King of Kings. The popular version is the result of alterations by various hands, most notably by Whitefield, who changed the opening couplet to the familiar one. In 1840-a hundred years after the publication of Hymns and Sacred Poems-Mendelssohn composed a cantata to commemorate Johann Gutenberg's invention of movable type printing, and it is music from this cantata, adapted by the English musician William H. Cummings to fit the lyrics of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, that propels the carol known today.

Gloria Patri (Glory Be to the Father) is composed by Christoph Meineke in MEINEKE tune. Arranged by Fritz Stanley for three-part chorus of female voices (SSA) in a cappella. This Gloria Patri text is usually known as the Lesser Doxology (what is known as the Greater Doxology begins Gloria in excelsis Deo; see 247). It is a liturgical text common to most Christian traditions and is often appended to the singing of Old Testament psalms or New Testament canticles. The traditional version of this text is found here, while a more modern translation occurs at 636. The initial part of the Gloria Patri may be traced back to the Trinitarian baptismal formula recordedin Matthew 28: 19; it was probably used by early Christians as an acclamation. The second part, which begins as it was in the beginning, was added in the fourth century as a response to the Arian heresy. Thus the text reflects the orthodox insistence on the consubstantiality of the Son with the Father and the eternal unity and equality of the three persons in the Trinity. Liturgical Use: Traditionally used at the end of Old Testament psalms and New Testament canticles and at the conclusion of certain prayers or creedal statements; a general doxology.

Originally conceived for the ensemble Enchanted Voices, these carols for SSA voices and organ (or piano) represent the composer’s desire for the tunes and texts to be heard in a new and fresh way. Largely contemplative, sometimes set against a gently-undulating foundation, these work well for concert and church use.
