The work plays with alternating A minor and A major tonalities, with three verses exploring forms of textural variation. The imitative recurring chorus is also varied on each return. The coda gradually builds in dynamics, texture and pitch, in setting repetitions of the word 'Amen', leading to the final A minor climax.
