Salsa de Shibby is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for one Flute and one Trumpet.This duet is based on the style of Salsa. The name Salsa was first used in 1960s New York to describe the popular and commercial dance music made by Latin emigrés in the city. Most of the musical and structural ideas came straight from Cuban Son Montuno, but the lack of one single traditional root has allowed musicians from different Latin American countries to bring their own flavours to the music. Given the tensions between the US and Cuba, there have been accusations of cultural appropriation and Cubans dislike the word Salsa, but there is no denying the music’s worldwide appeal. If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. Rhythms should be lightly articulated, the melody should always flow, and following the articulation in the score will help convey the style. Salsa de Shibby has a performance time of just over two and a half minutes. In 1986, the Tennessee Dance Theater commissioned the Suite to be performed at Nashville’s Summer Lights Festival. A few years later Edgar Meyer provided the beautiful string orchestra arrangement that is contained in this score. The individual tunes are in various folk styles appearing in a chronological order O’Connor says, not only represents the evolution of American folk music, but also mirrors his own family’s migration from Ireland and Holland to America. It traces the family’s route through the thirteen colonies initially, and then eventually West during WWI nearly 300 hundred years later. O’Connor wrote the pieces in a manner and style he felt his family could have heard along the way. The Suite begins with Irish music, perhaps similar to the music O’Connor’s family brought with them. Then in a thoughtful progression, he reveals music they must have encountered living in early America. Strings & Threads musically describes how folk music styles hundreds of years apart are interconnected – possessing a common thread – from an Irish reel to jazz.
