Concerto for Bass Trombone and Six Players (2006) was commissioned by the Carnegie
Mellon School of Music for the Carnegie Mellon Contemporary Ensemble, Walter Morales,
director. The work is dedicated to trombonist Jim Siders, for whom the solo part was written.
The work is scored for solo bass trombone with an ensemble of primarily “dark” instruments
– alto flute, clarinet, viola, cello, contrabass, and percussion. The solo bass trombone is the
focal point of the musical discourse, acting throughout largely as a protagonist – with much
material best described as bitterly lyrical. The work maintains a generally dark, obsessive,
and bitter tone throughout.
Unlike some concerti, however, the work is not about an aggression between soloist and the
rest of the ensemble. Rather the bass trombone is “first” among a collection of like minded
individuals – all expressing the same sentiments and aggressions.
The opening section is marked “spasmodic.” Quiet nervous twitches serve as a backdrop to a
melodic unfolding of the basic material and interval content. The end of this part “breaks
apart” to reveal a section marked “slow, otherworldly.” The harmonic material starts modal,
open, and “distant” in feeling (perhaps a recollection of a distant past) before becoming
gradually gnarled again.
The trombone leads towards the next section: an ever-building athletic “moto perpetuo.” This
reaches its peak in an aggressive and horribly angry climax – with a wide-ranging trombone
part marked “wildly raving; insane, ugly”, obliterated by bass drum hits and shrieking
hammer blows from the other instruments.
A nervous and timid interlude returns to the nervous twitching of the opening – though
everything is slightly slower and more hushed than before, finally breaking off into an
enigmatic coda.

John Baptist Loeillet, a Flemish Baroque composer, wrote six sonatas for flute and basso continuo in his Op. 5 No. 2. This work is widely considered to be some of his most significant compositions, and they are still performed today.

The sonatas are divided into three movements each, with two slow movements and one faster one. The flute part is very demanding, as Loeillet often wrote in the high register, and the accompanying basso continuo part provides a solid foundation for the piece. The music has an emotional intensity that was characteristic of the Baroque era, and it features various ornamentations, like trills and mordents. The influence of Corelli can be heard in the contrapuntal textures, and the melodic lines are often based on the scales and modes of the period.

Loeillet's Op. 5 No. 2 is a beautiful and captivating work, and its timelessness is a testament to its quality. It has been transcribed and adapted for other instruments, and it remains a popular choice for many classical musicians.

At long last I have nearly finished the 7th book. This book has posed some issues as it is such complex music it is almost impossible to cut it down to 5 parts while maintaining its integrity. As a result, some songs will be in 6 or more parts.

This is the largest song so far. It is very complex and was originally composed as a Soprano solo with a 9-part 'orchestra' split into three unequally sized 'choirs'. Choir 1 consisted of two cittarones (a kind of theorbo or archlute), a clavicembalo (early harpsichord) and a spinet.

Choir 2 comprised a string orchestra (viole da brazza, violins, viole da braccia, clavicembano (sic) and basso continuo).

Choir 3 comprised individual instruments viola da braccio or gamba, basso da braccio or gamba, contrabass and an (unnamed) keyboard.

As you might imagine, this was well nigh impossible to reduce to 5 players, so I have transcribed it for 9 brass instruments, more or less keeping to the original 'choir' groupings with a trumpet/cornet solo line. This is also one of the longest songs so far.

I hope you enjoy the result.

The text translates as: How softly, scented lips, I kiss you or listen to you. The poet is describing his inability to both kiss and hear his beloved's voice at the same time.

The seventh book is quite a change from the earlier ones. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.)

Once again, these songs are exquisitely crafted and travel well onto brass.

Fantasy in 3 movements for large wind ensemble, double bass and percussion

Confluence is the name of a place in Lyon where 2 rivers flow together: The SaĂ´ne flows into the - at least in German - female Rhone. In French, however, it flows into DEN Rhone - Le RhĂ´ne. This confuses the composer: How do rivers get their gender, are they sometimes male, sometimes female? Is it because of their character, because of the landscape that they flow through? By their water, even by their fish? On the people on their shores? A real confusion ensues. In the subsequent thoughts about music, the composer discovers certain analogies and asks himself the question: does gender-typical music actually exist? Or instruments? Typically male harmonies or rhythms? Or clearly female melodies and the way to interpret? The 3-movement composition is dedicated to this question and meanders like a dance in the bed of the converging streams. Colorful modal harmonies form the bed for wide arcs of melody. A varied, recurring theme sets the direction and creates a bubbling, dancing pull in the direction of the mouth: dancing finale!

  • 1st movement: Deux Characters

  • In the first movement (Andante) the roles are distributed - the Sâone and the RhĂ´ne get their performers. A first glance at the ensemble reveals a tendency: woodwinds take on the female lead, the male brass the counterpart. The two drummers each support one of the two poles in solidarity. The assignment may be obvious, but strong doubts remain in the final chord of the first movement.

  • 2. Dialogues:

  • In smaller and larger dialogues, there is a lively exchange and the properties are worked out and further developed. But it is also increasingly being copied and imitated, even maliciously agitated and aped. You try to convince each other, interrupt each other, both sides increasingly flare up, it gets louder and more hectic, louder and louder, too loud, until communication stops: in the end, you just yell at each other!

  • 3. Dance de Confusion

    The resulting confusion finds a conciliatory end in the third movement of the composition: Let's dance! In the end, the initial confusion turns into a confusion: what belongs together flows and dances together.
