Three American Folksongs for Brass Quintet was arranged in 2021 expressly for the Spanish Brass. 1. Oh Shenandoah is a traditional American folk song from the 19th Century of traders traveling down the Missouri River in canoes. II. Simple Gifts is a Shaker song written and composed in 1848, generally attributed to Elder Joseph Brackett (1797 - 1882) of Alfred Shaker Village in the state of Maine. This arrangement is for a tuba feature that the composer Gregory Fritze did in 1988 when he first started performing children’s concerts with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Brass Quintet, when he had to demonstrate the tuba. He adjusted this for the Spanish Brass in 2021. III. Yankee Doodle is a traditional folksong that dates to pre-revolutionary times, probably 1770’s.Three American Folksongs for Brass Quintet was recorded Spanish Brass and is on the CD Music for Brass Quintet by Gregory Fritze on the Spanish Brass label.Duration of the three folksongs is 11 minutes.

Variations on an American Folksong is a set of variations on the Appalachian folk song Brightest and Best, a shape note hymn for the season of Epiphany.  The music is tonal and melodic.  It is scored for 2 fl, 2 ob, 2 cl, 2 bsn, 2 horns, 2 trpts, timp and percuss (one player), and strings. The purchaser has permission to print the number of string parts necessary for the size of the orchestra.  The music is not difficult.  Duration is about 20 minutes. The audio sample is a digital rendition of the final fugue.

Thanksgiving is one of the most beautiful of holidays, a holiday filled with joy and music. We Gather Together to Ask the Lord's Blessing: Written in 1597 by Dutch composer Adrianus Valerius to celebrate Holland's victory over Spain, the tune was brought to American shores by the early Dutch settlers. Poet Theodore Baker wrote a new version of the lyrics in 1894, which became the standard Thanksgiving version. Over the River and Through the Wood: Lydia Maria Child, an outspoken abolitionist and advocate for Indian rights, wrote this poem in 1845. It was set to music by an unknown composer. Let All Things Now Living (The Ash Grove) This traditional Welsh melody (Llwyn Onn or The Ash Grove in Welsh) has inspired numerous lyricists to write words to the hauntingly beautiful tune. The poem by Katherine Davis, written in 1939, is the text most associated with Thanksgiving. Amazing Grace: Written by reprobate sailor John Newton in 1779. Known for his profanity, vulgarity and venery, he was imprisoned, beaten, and enslaved, before he reformed, and became a leading minister and hymn-writer. This is one of the most popular hymns ever written. This Land is Your Land: A traditional American tune, made famous by folksinger Woody Guthrie in 1940. Guthrie wrote the words as a rebuff to the song God Bless America, the huge hit by songwriter Irving Berlin. As a counter to Berlin's drum-beating patriotism, Guthrie would occasionally add politically charged verses expressing his support for communism. I hope you enjoy playing this as much as I enjoyed writing it. Here’s a new SSA choir arrangement of that ever-popular American folksong Shenandoah.  The original song probably has its origins among the French Canadians who traded with Native Americans around the Great Lakes during the sixteenth century. These traders exchanged weapons and tools for animal furs, especially beaver pelts. Paddling their canoes along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers the traders were well-known for their singing. However, as most of the traders were illiterate, the songs were never written down and went through numerous changes over the years and centuries. In most versions of the song, the lyrics tell of a seafarer, possibly a canoeing fur-trader, who was in love with the daughter of Shenandoah, a Native American Chief who lived in what is now the state of Virginia. Shenandoah was a real person: evidently an individual of commanding presence who lived for over a hundred years.  Shenandoah became one of the most popular capstan shanties, a slow song which set a manageable pace for the crew in a heavy and lengthy task. Most versions of the song have a similar couplet at the end of each verse. In some transcriptions, the melody is written out entirely in 4/4 time; others use triple time and some arrangements use a mixture of both. In this version, the lyrics have been selected from different versions of the song. This SSA arrangement for choir and piano is conceived for boy choir or girl choir and within easy technical reach of amateur or school choirs. The top soprano note is high F on the treble staff and the other parts fall well within the usual choral range. Each section of the choir takes the melody at some point. With a running time of 04:00 this piece is enjoyable to sing and hear. It’s an essential addition to your choir’s repertoire.

The top soprano note is F5 on the top line of the treble staff and the lowest note is E ♭ on the lowest line of the staff. The top alto note is B♭ (mid-staff) (B♭4) and the lowest note is B ♭3. The top tenor note is D4 (middle of treble staff) and the lowest note (only twice) is the low B flat (with an optional B flat an octave higher). With a running time of 04:00 this piece is enjoyable to sing and hear. It would make a useful addition to your choir’s repertoire.
