Each volume includes three works with piano, one unaccompanied piece, and one piece for two or more players of the instrument.

In this volume for Oboe, Anthony Gilbert's Sunrising is an aubade inspired by a short and sublime poem by Sir Willian Davenant, and contrasts sharply with the skittish humour of Thomas Pitfield's Polka. There are also two pieces by Margaret Lucy Wilkins - a poised Pirouette for solo oboe, and its companion piece for four oboes - Pas de Quatre. Richard Orton provides a contribution steeped in Greek mythology - the story of the shepherd Gyges and his magical ring of invisibility.

Sketched in Australia in 1981 at a time when Gilbert was studying Australian birdsong-choruses, the completion of Dawnfaring's mixture of freely and conventionally notated material was delayed until 1984 partly by its companion-piece, 'Moonfaring'. The three movements of, as Gilbert called it, his 'Australian aubade for viola and piano' each refer to a different Australian bird. Throughout the fifteen minute work the music progresses from rapt stillness to a frenzied toccata whilst exploring a wide range of moods and colours.

Based upon Jorge Luis Borges' imaginary ancient Chinese encyclopaedia in which the animal kingdom is broken down into fourteen categories such as 'Frenzied creatures' and 'Those belonging to the Emperor', this quartet reflects on the bizarre imagery suggested by these headings. 'The first movement 'Stray dogs' tends, after the fashion of these creatures, suddenly to appear in unexpected places' (Gilbert). This lively piece of character music would add much variety to any programme.
