Acoustic Guitar,Bouzouki,Instrumental Duet - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1451980

Composed by Socrates Arvanitakis. Classical,Contemporary. 12 pages. Socrates Arvanitakis #1031295. Published by Socrates Arvanitakis (A0.1451980).

This is a duet dance for 3-course bouzouki (Tuning: D3-A3-d4) and classical guitar. This bouzouki 3 course instrument as depicted in the photos provided, does not exist in Sibelius lists of instruments, therefore a mandolin sound is chosen for it.
Nikriz mode is a chromatic behaviour of a diatonic Aeolian (ancient Hypodorian) mode with raised 4th and 7th degrees.
Zeibekiko is a very ancient Greek dance rhythm in 9/4 (more rarely 9/8) with unequal groupings such as 2+2+2+3 and its variants. Some linguists say that its name is associated with the God Zeus and denoting his dual substance. It also is probably the most popular dance in modern day Greece.

Lo Ballo dell 'Intorcia

Antonio Valente (c1520-c1580) was an Italian organist and composer. In 1576 he published a collection entitled Intavolatura di Cimbalo, which contained Lo Ballo dell ’Intorcia (Intorcia’s Dance).

Lo Ballo begins very simply – deceptively simply – building around a lovely repeating chord pattern. But watch out – if you start off too quickly, those variations will tie your fingers into Gordian knots! The chord voicings are for octave mandola/bouzouki but can easily be adapted to any accompanying instrument – just keep those repeating chords in a simple rhythm. Just listening to this piece can leave you breathless!

Appledore

This a little piece I have – rather pretentiously – described as a pastoral. To be frank, unlike most of my compositions (jigs, reels, hornpipes, strathspeys etc), I had no particular dance form in mind when I wrote it.

Appledore is scored for octave mandola (or bouzouki tuned GDAE). It could be played on mandolin, I suppose, but it’s a bit fiddley. Performance tip: try picking this with your finger, rather than with a plectrum; the 2-, 3- and 4-note chords can be played as broken chords, which makes the whole tune rather more interesting (and more of a challenge!).

Appledore is a very pretty village in Kent, just north of Romney Marsh. I nearly moved there a few years ago but … didn’t.

Rufty Tufty

This is a country dance from Playford’s English Dancing Master of 1651. I have arranged it with the tune played through three times, first the basic melody, second with (mandolin) double stops, third with chords voiced for octave mandola or bouzouki, tuned GDAE.

In the seventeenth century a rufty tufty was a rough, tough person. Today, it sounds like a child’s soft toy. That’s what four hundred years’ linguistic evolution can do. Hey ho.

Composed by Filippo Azzaiolo. Arranged by Gordon Jackson. Classical,Folk,Multicultural,Renaissance,World. Score and parts. 8 pages. Gordon Jackson #6435525. Published by Gordon Jackson (A0.1017675).

Chi passa per ’sta strada

The sixteenth-century Italian composer, Filippo Azzaiolo (1530-1569), published three books of villotas (secular songs). In the first of these, Primo libro de villotte alla padoana a quattro voci, the first song (also the most popular) was Chi passa per ’sta strada (He who passes down this street). An exquisite chord sequence provide the basis for a simple melody, together with a set of variations I composed.

The left-hand part (quite odd really, as I don’t play any keyboard instrument, but I’m sure you know what I mean!) shows the chords as I would play them on an octave mandola or a bouzouki (both tuned GDAE, one octave below mandolin or violin), and the chord diagrams show my fingerings for these. Other accompanists can simply use the chords’ letter names, also included, and work out their own fingerings/voicings. However, I strongly recommend keeping accompaniment simple and percussive, accentuating the rhythm, allowing the mandolin or other lead instrument space in which to play those variations.
