This collection of eight solos aims to capture the styles and vocabulary of 10 masters of jazz drumming, and present that material in an accessible way. Much of the music available for drum set solos is difficult and geared towards those with a good amount of experience. These solos can be played by students as early as their first year of study on the drumset. It will give them exposure to material grounded in the jazz tradition, while hopefully remaining playable and generating interest and inspiration to forge deeper into the jazz drumming tradition. The eight solos are:NASHTY is inspired by Lewis Nash, and his intro on Say Hello to Calypso from a Jim Hall record called Grand Slam.ILADELPH is inspired by the classic vocabulary of Philly Joe Jones.CHILD'S PLAY brings to mind the carefree playing of both Paul Motian and Jorge Rossy.BREAKTHROUGH is inspired by the masterful vocabulary of Billy Higgins, particularly on Hank Mobley's The Break Through.THE TWISTED BARON tries to capture the vamp-oriented solos and sonic variety of Joey Baron.SOME TASTY STEW comes from the worlds of both Bill Stewart and Nasheet Waits, particularly Nasheet's intro on Kinda Dukish with Jason Moran.THANK YOU MATT WILSON! is based on the melodic soloing of Matt Wilson, specifically on his own tune, Thank You Billy Higgins!.BLAKEY’S TRY is inspired by the ferocious drumming of the great Art Blakey.

Concert Band - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1405543 Composed by Lee Morgan. Arranged by John Ivor Holland. 20th Century,Film/TV,Jazz,Soul,Standards. 92 pages. John Ivor Holland #988601. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1405543). 'The Sidewinder' is a 1964 album by jazz trumpeter Lee Morgan, recorded in New Jersey, U.S. It was released on the Blue Note label and the title track is perhaps Morgan's all-around best-known composition; it would go on to become a jazz standard and was additionally released as a single, entering the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1965. Morgan recorded the track with tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, pianist Barry Harris, double bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Billy Higgins. The album became Blue Note's best-selling record ever, breaking the previous sales record and saving the label from near bankruptcy. Record producer Michael Cuscuna recalls the unexpected success: the company issued only 4,000 copies upon release. Needless to say, they ran out of stock in three or four days. And 'The Sidewinder' became a runaway smash. The title track was used as the music in a Chrysler television advertisement during the 1965 Baseball World Series, without Morgan's permission; he threatened to sue, Chrysler agreed not to show the advertisement again and settled the case. This arrangement has been adapted from the jazz ensemble version by Mark Taylor, retaining solos for alto sax and trumpet, although an optional cut can be taken if necessary to skip these.

Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.808689 Composed by W. Benton Overstreet (1888-1935). Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Graduation,Holiday,Jazz,Traditional. Score and parts. 30 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #4331333. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808689).      William Benton Overstreet did it all-played piano, wrote songs, led bands. Probably the accomplishment for which he’s most remembered today is his composing of There’ll Be Some Changes Made, published in 1921. Billy Higgins, popular stage comedian, wrote the lyrics, and Ethel Waters, then just 24, recorded the song on the Black Swan label. The disc quickly achieved hit status, and the song has remained popular across multiple musical platform styles ever since.     This arrangement is a happy, fun piece and includes some of the great (and familiar) Vaudeville-style ornaments and phrases. It’s a real toe-tapper.     For the most part this arrangement is up-tempo, about 140 bpm. It does slow to 92 at the first iteration of the verse and again for the final ¬6 measures of the piece. Time signature is 4/4 except for measure 89, which is 6/4. The key is B-flat throughout, and the melody weaves among all instruments.     Trumpet 1 plays B5 (B-flat trumpet’s high C) briefly at measures 4 and 35 and for two measures at the very end of the piece. Tuba plays G3 briefly several times in measures 90-93. Other than that, there are no exceptionally out-of-normal-range notes. Trumpets 1 and 2 may wish to double-tongue at measure 64.     This arrangement was completed in 2019, and performance time runs about 3 minutes, 30 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, would be very interested in your comments; contact him at lessmith@ufl.edu. Other contemporary versions were recorded by Benny Goodman, Django Reinhardt and the Mills Brothers. It was also featured in a 1937 Popeye short Organ Grinder's Swing.Organist Jimmy Smith recorded Organ Grinder's Swing on his 1965 album Organ Grinder Swing. Vibraphonist Milt Jackson recorded it again in 1976 live at the Kosei Nenkin, Tokyo, with Teddy Edwards, Cedar Walton, Ray Brown and Billy Higgins.I have adapted this song for an organ, brass and percussion concert to something light and jazzy and requested my partner in crime, Sam Harrill, to add the percussion part.
