Götterdämmerung is the last in Richard Wagner's cycle of four epic music dramas titled Der Ring des Nibelungen. It received its premiere at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus on 17 August 1876, as part of the first complete performance of the whole work.It featured at the end of the 1981 John Boorman film 'Excalibur' when Sir Percival reluctantly throws 'Excalibur' to the Lady of the Lake and King Arthur dies.This arrangement is for brass band - and I have to say, it was rather difficult to make if fit and work properly! I hope you like the final outcome of my endeavours.

This popular melody was composed by Charles Henry Purday in the 19th Century, but the popular hymn is attributed to J B Dykes and is known as 'Sandon'. He extended it into the well-known verison often featured at funeral services in the United Kingdom. This version features a rendition of 'The Last Post' bugle call after a modulation to Bb.

An elderly gentleman got in touch and asked if I could write down a Christmas Carol he’d composed. I agreed, and had several visits with him when he sang the carol he’d composed. I wrote it all down, and produced this vocal/piano version for him, and then created a brass band version too. He came to our band one night to hear what I’d done, and was visibly moved. Sadly, he passed away very soon after this, but at least his daughter Wendy had her carol. It’s a very traditional carol, yet with differences, and would add a new edge to any Christmas concert.

He was a very senior figure in the scouting movement, and dedicated his later life to the movement. The Mortimer Scout Hut where he was based has gone from a ramshakle old shed to a purpose-built building commensurate with his commitment. Pete was a World War 2 Royal Marine veteran having being involved with the D-Day landings – of which he rarely spoke, and was a well-known figure in his home village – often maintaining the church grounds. He was presented with an award by Her Majesty the Queen for his work with the scouting movement. He was also one of those presented with the ‘Legion D’Honeur’ medal when they were issued.

One of the movements is now published as 'The Love That We Share' by Musikverlag-Frank. This is a big, bright fanfare suitable for any occasion - not too short, and definitely not too long! I've rewritten it here in 2022 and added some big percussion. It'd make a great opener for any concert, but would equally work for special occasions outdoors.

An ever so slightly 'tongue in cheek' humorous version of this work from Handel's 'Messiah'. It uses a quartet of soloists including Solo Cornet, Tenor Horn, Euphonium and EE Bass. The piece is suitable for Christmas concerts, and indeed the major work is normally performed at this festive time. The cymbals player stands with his cymbals at the ready throughout the whole piece but doesn't actually get to play them..! The trombones get a laugh too. The whole thing requires the band to 'act up' somewhat, and the score and parts have instructions on what to do and when...!

It's based on a selection of Somerset Folk Songs which have been 'worked on' shall we say.The work is being premiered by Exeter Symphony Orchestra on Saturday 18th March 2023 at Holy Trinity Church in Exmouth, Devon, UK. It is also the official march of several Commonwealth navies, including the Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal New Zealand Navy. It was also the official march of the Royal Australian Navy, but has now been replaced by the new march, Royal Australian Navy. The music of Heart of Oak was written in 1759 by composer William Boyce, the lyrics by actor David Garrick, for Garrick's pantomime Harlequin's Invasion, to which others contributed as well. The pantomime was first performed on New Year's Eve of that year at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London, with Handel soloist Samuel Thomas Champnes singing Heart of Oak. The wonderful year referenced in the first verse was the Annus Mirabilis of 1759, during which British forces were victorious in several significant battles: the Battle of Minden on 1 August 1759; the Battle of Lagos on 19 August 1759; the Battle of the Plains of Abraham (outside Quebec City) on 13 September 1759; and the Battle of Quiberon Bay on 20 November 1759. The last battle foiled a French invasion project planned by the Duc de Choiseul to defeat Britain during the Seven Years' War, hence the reference in the song to 'flat-bottom' invasion barges. These victories were followed a few months later by the Battle of Wandiwash in India on 22 January 1760. Britain's continued success in the war boosted the song's popularity. The oak in the song's title refers to the wood from which British warships were generally made during the age of sail. The Heart of oak is the strongest central wood of the tree. The reference to freemen not slaves echoes the refrain (Britons never will be slaves!) of Rule, Britannia!, written and composed two decades earlier.
