Concert Band - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1402451 By Duke Ellington and his Orchestra. By Duke Ellington, Irving Mills, and Juan Tizol. Arranged by John Ivor Holland. 20th Century,Broadway,Jazz,Latin,Musical/Show,Standards. 78 pages. John Ivor Holland #985670. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1402451). Caravan is an American jazz standard that was composed by Juan Tizol and Duke Ellington and first performed by Ellington in 1936. Irving Mills wrote lyrics, but they are rarely sung. The song is featured prominently in the 2014 film Whiplash as an important plot element and over the years has been covered by diverse artists, such as Thelonius Monk, Dizzy Gillespie and Wynton Marsalis. 'Sophisticated Ladies' is a musical revue based on the music of Duke Ellington; the revue ran on Broadway in 1981–83, earning two awards and eight nominations at the 35th Tony Awards. This arrangement is based on a jazz ensemble chart by Michael Sweeney with short solos for tenor sax and trumpet (chords and suggested solo lines provided).

Carillon,Instrumental Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1301689 By Duke Ellington and his Orchestra. By Duke Ellington, Irving Mills, and Juan Tizol. Arranged by Michael Gancz. 20th Century,Broadway,Film/TV,Jazz,Latin,Musical/Show. Individual part. 8 pages. Michael Gancz #891301. Published by Michael Gancz (A0.1301689). Caravan is one of Duke Ellington's (1899-1974) most famous compositions—although he didn't actually write it. That credit goes to Puerto Rican trombonist Juan Tizol (1900-1984), a member of the Ellington's big band from 1929 to 1944. Tizol composed the theme in 1936 and promptly sold the rights to lyricist Irving Mills for only $25. The song became an instant hit—jazz critic Ted Gioia expllains that it fit perfectly with the musical exoticism that patrons were demanding at [Ellington's] regular gig at the Cotton Club in Harlem. Indeed, much jazz from this era, especially Ellington's, was steeped in Orientalist aesthetics. Although we hear it now as a self-contained musical phenomenon, we must acknowledge this music's problematics even as we continue to celebrate its progressive and revolutionary qualities. Part of my interest in this piece is in its capacity as a vessel in which I can explore my own multiform identity as an expatriate of the Middle East, a carillonist, and a lover of jazz. This arrangement reflects what might happen when these three perspectives collide. Ellington recorded Caravan more than 100 times, and the names of its additional interpreters reads as a history of jazz itself: Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, Nat King Cole, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis and dozens more all brought their own spin to the tune. What makes it particularly special, though, is its appeal to listeners outside the jazz fandom. The 2014 film Whiplash introduced mass audiences to the song's unique atmosphere and to the genius of the Duke and his sidemen, thanks to an outstanding big band arrangement by John Wasson. My setting of the tune for the carillon recalls both Duke and Tizol's original version and this more recently popular edition. In this arrangement, I hope to highlight the carillon's capacity as a percussion instrument, and to use this as a bridge into the world of jazz. A successful interpretation will focus on groove, stratification of voices, and balance. Try to keep the pedals light!Michael Gancz2023Sources:Gioia, Ted (2012). Small Ensemble Bass Guitar,Drums,Piano,Voice - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.969094 Composed by Dick Coburn, John Schonberger, and Vincent Rose. Arranged by Dan Gabel. Contemporary. Score and parts. 2 pages. Daniel Clayton Gabel #6256055. Published by Daniel Clayton Gabel (A0.969094). A favorite of bands, jazz musicians, and dancers for one hundred years, Whispering has stood the test of time. It is a great tune, and one of great historic importance that deserves a place in your band's library! This is more than a lead sheet: it is an arrangement in Ab, including the lyrics, and the rarely-heard verse (with a second set of lyrics). This is ready to pass out to your combo: bass, guitar, drums, piano, voice, and some horns, too. The chart is professionally engraved and formatted for ease of reading. Optional Tag ending provides a nice arranged ending for your group as well. This arrangement is based on the stellar recording by Bing Crosby with Bob Scoby's Frisco Jazz Band on:Bing with a Beat (RCA Victor, 1957) - see history below.Whispering - a brief history:One of the first recordings made by a Big Band, it was a huge hit for Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra, selling over one-million copies in 1920. Benny Goodman's Trio recorded a famous version for Victor in 1936 featuring Teddy Willson on piano and Gene Krupa on drums. The pleasing chord changes are the basis for the famous contrafact by Dizzy Gillespie: Groovin' High. Revived once again with the original verse, Bing Crosby recorded it on one of the best jazz vocal albums of the 1950s: Bing with a Beat, with Bob Scoby's Frisco Jazz Band. Because of the historic importance and the great melody, Whispering was chosen by Dan Gabel (the arranger of this lead sheet) as his personal theme tune in 2010. Gabel opens every show with different arrangements of the song, featured by Dan Gabel's High Society Orchestra (Hot Jazz of the Roaring 20s), and recorded and featured with great success by Dan Gabel and The Abletones (Big Band).

A great exercise to learn how to improvise. Anthropology (also known as Thriving from a Riff or Thriving on a Riff) is a bebop-style jazz composition that is credited to Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Parker stated in 1949 that Gillespie had played no part in its writing, and that others had added the trumpeter as co-composer. It is a contrafact, being based on the harmony of I Got Rhythm.
