This piece is a product of a warm reunion between student and teacher. When Gabrielle Liriano was just 7 years old she had Jennifer Tilley-Feather as her elementary public school music teacher. It was some of her first expeditions into the world of music. Back then Jennifer Tilley Feather was Ms. Tilley, a phenomenal music teacher and her classroom was where Gabrielle decided that music would be her path.

Almost 20 years later Jennifer Tilley-Feather is still a phenomenal music teacher at the same elementary school, but now goes by Ms. Feather and her student Gabrielle has become a contemporary music composer, a career she owes to Jennifer. 

A simple visit to the school sparked an explosion of bonding, collaboration, and opportunities that resulted in this piece.

Chasing Horizon

A Poem by Gabrielle Liriano

Look out at that horizon line
A new day is dawning
The birds are yawning
And the humans are crawling out of bed

Stretch for that horizon line
Its auburn fills your eyes
Wakeful rays for morning sighs
A day’s work is ahead

Reach for that horizon line
It’s not getting any closer
But would you want it to?

Toward that horizon line
is a meadow laced with lilac
Stop and smell, Stay and unpack
But just for a short view

Because you need to race for that horizon line
Like the zebras in the wild
Chasing dreams done in style
Will they ever come true?

Stare at that horizon line
You fall onto your knees
In distress you feel the breeze
It will take care of you

Rest, for that horizon line
Proceeds to hide the sun
Blackness hinders a run
And it is time to sleep

Don’t worry that horizon line
Will wake you in the morning
And its beams will send you soaring
Another day Another leap

Follow the Omens tells the story of a huntress lost in a forest. The forest is beautiful, but dense filled with all sorts of peculiar creatures, rustling sounds, earthy smells, and lush natural scenes.

There are no obvious trails out of the forest and the huntress fears she might never find her way back home. She finds herself running away from anonymous threats, the startling sounds of things she cannot see and relies on signs the forests gives her to bring her to safety.

One might imagine the end of this piece as arriving at the edge of cliff to a striking view, the presence cozy cabin, or a humble village. Ultimately, the forest guides the huntress home.

This piece is a celebration of my heritage and ancestry. By incorporating aspects of Palo music in a traditionally Euro-centric style of music I hope to expand the boundaries for what is possible in contemporary classical music as it reflects the eclectic collage of where I come from. I hope to specifically illuminate the underrepresented aspects of my identity in composition as it is those aspects that can create uniqueness and innovation in the long history and tradition classical music. 

Performing my music is a rebellious act. 

Centuries of composers have been misguided to dismiss the study of complex rhythm and groove as it is a subject associated with the music of Africa. Now with time and exhaustion of European principles we must look to the countries of Africa with reverence for our missing education on one of the vital ingredients of music. 

I hope you enjoy the kaleidoscope of colors and weaved rhythms that come together to make this piece come alive! 

This piece is dedicated to all the ancestors that came before me.

May I honor their lives with music.

This piece is an attempt to provoke the fantasy nostalgia for an exciting evening amongst the glowing neon signs of seedy dim lit bars, cigars, yellow cabs, and expensive cocktails. Dressed in pearls, black tights, and stilettos, trench coats, and an assortment of fashionable hats. This piece is set in flickering alley ways and wide windy lamp lit streets under a dark sky where bright busses whip by. The night is young and under the looming moon troublemakers make questionable plans. Those observing will wonder with intrigue.

The character of this piece wakes up dazed, confused, and in a bewildering fog. With a heavy head and dense limbs he struggles through the morning. Like a lagging computer, each task takes many moments to survey before acting upon when suddenly the character remembers the most pressing project is due. Urgency washes over him as he throws his things into a backpack, wrestles with his shoes, and stumbles out the door. He embodies a nervous sprint towards lateness.
