PERFORMANCE NOTES FROM THE COMPOSER:

I AM is a singing meditation. It is both a piece that honors the individual and the whole. It is meant to affirm an individual's worth, as well as the whole collective. When a choir prepares for a performance, they rehearse a piece dozens if not hundreds of times. I wanted the experience of rehearsing I AM to be an ongoing declaration of the singer’s value. Therefore, every phrase in this piece is an affirmation. When a singer finds themselves singing the piece outside of rehearsal, they will be singing words that are positive and affirming. I cannot express how much joy that brings me as a composer.

Musically, I AM is both complex, with its 7-part vocal split, contrasting rhythms, and varying accents, yet simple in its repetition, lyrics, and tonality. Each of the 7 parts sings a unique affirmation throughout the piece. They are simple statements like, I am enough and I am love, but can hold so much complexity depending on an individual's relationship with the statement. In the middle of the piece, there is an aleatoric section where each singer contributes their unique affirming statement. It creates a chaotic building of sound before coming together for the first and only time in the piece to sing I AM as a whole choir in block chords.  It is one of my favorite moments in the piece because simple and complex are just a beat apart.

I AM was commissioned by the Grand Rapids Women's Chorus and premiered on May 10, 2024.

If you would like to hear more about the creation of the piece, you can hear the composer's original explantions on
Youtube.

Composed by Kevin G. Pace (ASCAP), Mary Ann W. Snowball. Christian,Praise & Worship,Religious,Sacred,Spiritual. 7 pages. Kevin G. Pace #894741. Published by Kevin G. Pace (A0.1305303).

A stunningly beautiful vocal duet for alto and tenor. Ā Music by Kevin G. Pace. Ā Text by Mary Ann W. Snowball. Ā Text inspired by the the verse in Doctrine and Covenants 29:5 I am your advocate with the Father.

Text:
I Will Plead Your Cause
ā€œ. . . (I) am your advocate with the Father; . . .ā€ - Doctrine and Covenants 29:5

Alto: I have sinned and cannot be restored
To Fatherā€™s sight, to Fatherā€™s heavnā€™ly door.
I am stopped, but there is One whose life
Was givā€™n for me so I would not know strife.

Tenor: I am Christ, and I will plead your cause.
For this I bled so you would not be lost.
I am Christ, who died on Calvary
To show my love to you explicitly.

Tenor: Those who will confess my Name to all,
To those will I confess when Father calls.
But if they deny my Name to men,
They, too, will I deny to Father then.

Alto: I have sinned, but I have faith in Thee;
To be my advocate, will Thou now be?
As I plead for mercy and thy grace,
Will Thou help me discover Fatherā€™s face?

Both sing at the same time:
Alto: I have sinned; O will Thou plead my cause
Before my Fatherā€™s face, or Iā€™ll be lost?
Thou art Christ, who died on Calvary
To show thy love to me explicitly.
Thou art Christ, who died to save my soul.
Thou art Christ. Thou died to make me whole.

Tenor: I am Christ, and I will plead your cause
Before my Fatherā€™s face so youā€™re not lost.
I am Christ, who died on Calvary
To show my love to you explicitly.
I am Christ, who died to save your soul.
I am Christ. I died to make you whole.

The Claims of the Son 5: I Am the Road

ā™« original song for SATB choir and piano by Stephen R Dalrymple

ā™« based on John 14

ā™« This collection of songs focuses on the Claims of Jesus Christ based on the ā€œI Amā€™s of the Gospel of John.Ā

ā™« On the night of His arrest, Jesus told the disciples that He was going away, leaving them, and they could not follow Him.Ā

ā™« He further explained that they knew the road He was taking. Philip asked His destination so he could figure out the route.Ā

ā™« But His claim ā€œI Am the Road, the Truth, and the Lifeā€ was not speaking of a destination with latitude and longitude coordinates. Jesus is plainly claiming that He alone is the only path to God, the path to truth, and the path to eternal life.

ā™« ā€œI Am the Roadā€ has a dual listing. It is also used as a worship song.

Composed by James H. Fillmore, R. Kelso Carter, and William Moore. Arranged by Amanda Tero. Children,Christian,Religious,Sacred. Score. 9 pages. Amanda Tero #772646. Published by Amanda Tero (A0.1172421).

Delight your late beginner students with three exciting hymns in level 2 sheet music solos. These are specifically arranged for the students who like a little bouncy touch to their hymns.

Great for church services or recital for both piano students and piano teachers. This works well for the smaller church offertories that only need about 1 minute of piano playing.

This piano sheet music is equivalent to most Level 2 or ABRSM Grade 2.

6 pages total. 1 piece in F. 2 pieces in C.

Musical elements in Brethren We Have Met to Worship

  • Note values: whole notes, dotted half notes, half notes, half rests, quarter notes, eighth notes
  • Note reading: bass clef C2 to F4, treble clef Bb3 to A5
  • 8va
  • RH reading bass clef
  • RH over left hand
  • Accidentals
  • Ties
  • Finger numbers

Practice tips for Brethren We Have Met to Worship

The most funā€“and hardestā€“part of this arrangement is the right hand, measures 11-14. The right hand is not only reading bass clef, but is reading the lowest notes in the piece of music. This is a great place to start.Ā

Additionally, the left hand for the first page is an open fifth the entire time but changes on the second page. So it may be beneficial to start learning the left hand intervals on the second page first.

Musical elements in I am Resolved

  • Note values: whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, eighth rests
  • Note reading: bass clef C2-E4, treble clef C4-E5
  • Drop-roll (slur-staccato)
  • Staccatos
  • Moving left hand
  • Accidentals
  • LH octave reach
  • A lot of thirds
  • Broken chords

Practice tips for I am Resolved

While the left hand starts with a catchy left hand pattern, it does get more complicated for the chorus, starting in measure 11. It would benefit the student to focus a little extra attention on the rapidly changing notes of the left hand for the chorus. While the chorus is harder, it does feature repetition, so have the student identify the measures that are the same.

Musical elements in Standing on the Promises

  • Note values: whole notes, half notes, half rests, quarter notes, quarter rests, eighth notes
  • Note reading: bass clef C2-E4, treble clef C4-C6
  • Fermata
  • Staccatos
  • Accidentals
  • Chromatic scale
  • LH octave reach

Practice tips for Standing on the Promises

If your student doesnā€™t know their chromatic scale yet, this is the perfect piece to teach it to them! If they already know a chromatic scale, then they will be able to easily master the last two measures.Ā

There is a solid left hand pattern that will be beneficial to help the student analyze. If they figure out the pattern it will make learning easier.

Throughout the centuries, sundials (a flat plate that marks the time of the day by the shadow of a gnomon which is cast onto it) have been used by civilizations to tell time. Unlike modern clocks and digital watches, in which every single second has its own momentary significance, telling time by sundial is more evolutionary. The seconds, and hours, melt into one another. It is perhaps for this reason that sundials have often been conceived not only as practical time pieces, but as works of art, metaphors, and creations that are inherent expressions of the personality of their creators. Etched in many sundials across the world, in Latin, English, German, and other languages are often found mottoes that reflect the thoughts of the sundial's creator. These mottoes can be fatalistic, humorous, transient, morbid, or serene, and almost always involve the subjects of time, the passing of the hours, life and its brevity, or metaphors involving shadows. Many times these mottoes feature some witticism, such as I only count the sunny hours (since a shadow must be present for a sundial to function). Other times, they can be revealingly existential (We are but shadow), and other times offer advice (Use the hours, don't count them).

It is these statements of philosophy, etched in sundials throughout the centuries, that most interests me. I am currently composing a set of movements for piano trio (Piano, Violin, Cello) dedicated to the mottoes found on sundials, and their significance to me. The first movement, subtitled Tempus Edax Rerum (Time devours things) is expansive and attempts a feeling of eternity, into which all seemingly fast moving workings of human beings are inevitably subsumed. For the second movement I am considering the phrase Pereunt et Imputantur (They pass and are counted referring to the hours of the day), and its implication of the way in which time can slip away, whether we observe it or not.

Composed by Jacob Evans. Christian,Gospel,Sacred. Octavo. 9 pages. JDE FORCHRISTMUSIC #3374747. Published by JDE FORCHRISTMUSIC (A0.940065).

This piece of music is a statement of faith. The chorus states, Yes, I know, the Lord, He loves me so! It is a fun, bright song that is perfect for many different occasions.

Lyrics:
Verse 1
Every day through life we're faced with sin and strife,
We see that the heart of men is black;
They say that they all know the way,
They think they're satisfied with what they have.
When at first we see that Jesus set us free,
Our selfish self says we know what's right.
But since we are filthy we must turn to the light.

Chorus
Yes, I know, The Lord, he loves me so;
He saved me from bondage deep within.
I know where I'm going; I'm assured of that home,
The new earth that is free from death and sin!
Oh yes, I know, the Lord, he loves me so,
For he took my sin and changed it for his love.
Since I made him me guide I now feel certain inside
That I am going to heaven above!

Verse 2
None can know that day that he will show
Himself to this world he made so well;
He'll stand and say who chose the way of sin
Or who on right things chose to dwell.
If he came today, would you stand in dismay
And say that you're not ready to depart?
Be willing, accept him
As Lord into your heart.

Chorus.

Yes, I know!

Composed by Michelle Willis. A Cappella,Contemporary. Octavo. 10 pages. Teton Music #5033147. Published by Teton Music (A0.887281).

SATB, a cappella

Written for the Early Light Academy Spotlight Singers (South Jordan, UT) and taken from actual responses from the students they were asked, when people look at you, what do you want them to see? This song is intended to be a very personal expression for the singers as well as for the audience.

Text:
I see: eyes and a face, hands and feet
You see: the same
I see: tears and a smile, working, moving
You see: the same
I see: pain, joy, strength, endurance
You see, you think you see-but you canā€™t name it.
I see you, please see me.
When you look at me, see a person who isnā€™t afraid to be-- just be.
I am tall or I am small, but I am happy to be me.
I may be confident or meek, I may be really strong or weak,
And if it changes week to week, it doesnā€™t matter.
What matters is that you see me.
When you listen, notice that my voice may sometimes raise the roof
And other times it may seem aloof when I cannot find the proof
Of what is truth and what is fair, but listen ā€˜til you hear me share
And know deep down I really care, because it matters.
It matters that you see me.
I see: someone who is strong and kind, someone who knows their mind,
Someone who struggles just like me, but keeps fighting endlessly
I see you, please see me.
I see: a soul who finā€™ly knows Iā€™m here
And doesnā€™t judge if I bow down to smallish fears
You see me, and I see you, thereā€™s nothing greater we can do
Than to acknowledge weā€™re all travā€™ling down this road,
But not alone.
It matters-
That I see you-and you see me.

ā€˜Donā€™t want to miss a thingā€™, recorded by Aerosmith, and written by Diane Warren is a hugely popular rock ballad that was a number one hit in the USA. Selling over a million copies in the UK, it reached number four in the UK singles chart. Always a favourite for weddings, Capriccio Quartet recorded it for their repertoire, and it is a song that easily lends itself to a string arrangement.

I chose to stick to the original key of D, a great key for string players. At times I have thickened the texture by using double stopping. In this arrangement I have tried to use an open string wherever possible. In some cases there are bare fifths. If you prefer you can choose one of the notes to play instead, especially if this note is doubled in another part. I have also put in some bowing, but the endgame is to feel comfortable, so please feel free to change it and alter the slurring if it makes it easier. I have given the cellist some solos, but everyone in the quartet has some time in the sun in this arrangement. And   donā€™t be afraid to use open strings in this piece, especially in the semi- quavers. They sound great!

I am aiming this quartet at the professional market, for weddings and other events, but I am hopeful that younger players will also have the courage to try it, even if the intention is not to ever perform it but to have some fun! Let me hear any recordings you make. I can be reached very easily on Facebook and love to get feedback from people who buy my arrangements.

My Youtube Channel has many of my arrangements for String Quartet, most recorded by Capriccio Quartet, and all but two are available as Sheet Music Plus products. Please visit me there :- Helen Marple-Horvat, Songwriter, Arranger, Composer
