Canon (Pachelbel) (Bb) (String Octet - 3 Violin, 2 Viola, 2 Cello, 1 Bass) - Advanced/Intermediate - Digital Download. This selection, Johann Pachelbel's celebrated Canon, is perhaps the most famous canon ever written and has been one of my favorite compositions to arrange. A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for a String Octet consisting of 3 Violins, 2 Violas, 2 Violoncellos and 1 Double Bass. One Violin, one Viola and one Violoncello play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the other five instruments. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but could also be performed by professional performers. It is perfect for concerts and church services, especially for Weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (36 pages). This version is written in the key of Bb Major, but, if you prefer, another version, written in the key of D Major, is also available. Other versions of Pachelbel's Canon have also been arranged by Regis Bookshar and are available for a wide variety of instrumental Quintets and Octets, in both the keys of D Major and Bb Major. This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.O Christmas Tree is a German Christmas song based on a traditional folk song which was unrelated to Christmas. The custom of the Christmas tree developed in the course of the 19th century, and the song came to be seen as a Christmas carol. The modern lyrics were written in 1824 by the Leipzig organist, teacher and composer, Ernst Anschutz. A tannenbaum is a fir tree. The lyrics do not actually refer to Christmas or describe a decorated tree. Instead, they refer to the fir's evergreen quality as a symbol of constancy and faithfulness.In this arrangement of O Christmas Tree, Regis Bookshar has kept the basic outline of this familiar song, but has inserted a short interlude, which brings to mind the sound of alphorns, or alpenhorns, instruments which may be made from red pine, or fir trees. and are used by mountain dwellers in the Bavarian Alps. I think that students will enjoy this imitative section in the song. In addition to this version for a String Quintet, consisting of 2 Violins, 1 Viola and 2 Violoncellos, there are also other arrangements of O Christmas Tree available for a variety of instrumental ensembles. It incorporates two traditional French melodies into one exciting arrangement, which, I'm certain, will entertain both performers and audiences alike. It is suitable for high school and college students and is perfect for Christmas concerts and church services but could be performed anytime and anywhere. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (21 pages). It begins with a Burgundian Air, played by a solo instrument. The melody is then played by two instruments in harmony before the rest of the ensemble joins in. This is followed by the March of the Three Kings, a Provencal melody (La Marche Des Rois Mages) which dates from the 13th century and recalls the Three Kings of the Christmas story. The peasants probably sang and danced to this tune, even perhaps honoring their own folk heroes, the French dukes, dressed in their shining armor and carrying brilliant banners, as they marched off to the Crusades. Georges Bizet utilized this tune as a farandole, or stately dance, in his incidental music for Alphonse Daudet's play L'Arlesienne (The Girl from Arles). There is a fugal section in which each instrument enters, playing an embellished version of the tune before concluding the arrangement. The Portuguese word choro (pronounced [ˈʃoɾu]), means cry or lament, though most music of this type is far from being sorrowful. Diese Gebete werden den Tieren in den Mund gelegt, die mit Noah, in der drangvollen Enge der Arche vereint, das Ende der Sintflut erwarten. Die Dichterin folgt einer Tradition - man denkt an Asop, La Fontaine und Goethe - wenn sie im Wesen der Kreaturen Spiegelungen menschlicher Schwachen, Fehler und Tugenden erkennt. Denn die in der Wasserwuste gefangenen Tiere reden so fromm, furchtsam, selbstgerecht und banal, wie es menschlich ware. Und auch das Allzumenschliche - Hoffart, Leichtsinn, Neid - kommt zu Wort. Der Zyklus schien mir zur Vertonung geeignet, weil er ein religioses Thema unpratentios und originell vortragt und ein Stuck ermoglicht, das die ubliche Trennung zwischen weltlich und geistlich uberschreitet und Konzertsaal und Kirche in Anspruch nehmen kann. Zur Besetzung: Der Frauenchor muss aus den vier ublichen Stimmlagen 1. und 2. Sopran, 1. und 2. Alt bestehen, wobei auch noch Stimmteilungen vorkommen. In Nr. 9 Gebet der Taube wird noch ein (aus dem Chor zu bildendes) Soloquartett gebraucht. Der Instrumentalpart besteht aus einer Oboe und einem Streicherquintett (1. und 2. Violine, Viola, Violoncello und Kontrabass). Die Besetzung soll solistisch sein, kann aber bei den Streichern (und wenn die Klangbalance zum Chor dies wunschenswert macht) zu einem kleinen Kammerorchester erweitert werden. Der Charakter der Instrumente, ihre Techniken und Farben, erlauben mir realistische Klangmetaphern und physiognomische Parallelen - so, wenn das Cello im Duett mit dem Alt die hochmutige Giraffe in grossintervalligen Sprungen deutet, die rasende Geschaftigkeit der Ameise sich in schnellen Violinbariolagen ausdruckt oder die Oboe ein naturalistisches Rabengekrachz horen lasst. In Nr. 9 Gebet der Taube wird noch ein (aus dem Chor zu bildendes) Soloquartett gebraucht. Der Instrumentalpart besteht aus einer Oboe und einem Streicherquintett (1. und 2. Violine, Viola, Violoncello und Kontrabass). Die Besetzung soll solistisch sein, kann aber bei den Streichern (und wenn die Klangbalance zum Chor dies wunschenswert macht) zu einem kleinen Kammerorchester erweitert werden. The Mixed Abilities School Ensemble Series has the flexibility to allow pupils of different standards to play together in one ensemble (up to five parts). It also encourages students to develop improvisation skills by providing soloing opportunities within all parts, with suggested pitches for improvising. Each piece has five different parts which are split into four ability levels as follows: A – Range of about 5 notes, easy rhythms. B – Range of about 1 octave, basic rhythms. C – Range of about a 12th, some more difficult rhythms. D – Range of about 2 octaves, some rhythmic complexity. This enables the teacher to select parts which are suitable for the standard of individual players in the group. As a general rule, the pieces have been composed as follows: Part 1 – melody / countermelody (alternates with Part 2) Part 2 – melody / countermelody (alternates with Part 1) Part 3 – accompaniment (synchronises with Part 4) Part 4 –accompaniment (synchronises with Part 3) Part 5 – bass line (independent) Each part also comes in a wide array of transpositions, clefs and pitches. Hence, almost any combination of instruments can play together in an ensemble of mixed abilities,including: Flutes, clarinets, saxophones, mixed woodwind, trumpets, mixed brass (including brass band), violins, strings, keyboards/pianos, tuned percussion. An ensemble using any combination of instruments (as is often found within schools) will work effectively as well. Example: A quintet might be selected as follows: 1A (violin), 2C(trumpet), 3B (clarinet), 4B (tenor sax), 5D (trombone) The melody in 1A would be very simple but would contrast nicely when passed to the more difficult 2C. Parts 3B and 4B will have quite a simple accompaniment between them, whilst the bass line on 5D will be more complex and rhythmically interesting. Parts can obviously be doubled up as well beyond five players. Please note that the teacher of the ensemble should be careful to pick parts which are well-suited to the players’ abilities. CRAZY LATIN! is the second piece in this series, and has additional parts for Latin percussion commonly found in the classroom. This series was born out of a desire to have beginning players participate in worship and play along side more experienced players. These arrangements are written with a melody part in each instrument's clef. The melody part is the same from instrument to instrument with slight variations in register. Along with the melody part is a harmony part or ensemble part. Unlike the melody parts, each ensemble part is unique to that instrument. The piano accompaniment is the glue that holds it all together. This arrangement to be played as a solo with accompaniment, or any combination duet, trio, quartet or quintet with piano accompaniment. By having one or more instruments play the melody part, and then add any other instrument on their ensemble part.     The melody part is overall the easiest or simplest part. The ensemble parts can be a little more techincal. These techniques would include harder string crossings, and some position work.       This scoring flexiblity allows less-experienced players of any stringed instrument to play the melody part, and the more-experienced string players to play their instrument's ensemble part. This allows all levels of string players to play together any combination.       Jesus Shall Reign is a hymn text by Isaac Watts and was set to music by John Hatton. This triumphant hymn may not be known to young string players so the words to the hymn are written into the melody part of each instrument. While this is unusual to find hymn text in instrumental arrangements, the printed lyric allows us to play with understanding. The melody part can be played all in first position.  Set in the keys of D and G, a modulation allows the players play the tune using different finger patterns, and adds variety to the arrangement while staying in position.
