Composition
This piece was commissioned to celebrate the 200th Anniversary (Bicentennial) of the founding of the city of Franklin, Indiana. Â This piece opens with a bold brass fanfare introduction, then it has a 16 bar excerpt from a famous Fred Jewell march. Â Franklin has a long history of community bands and a Jewell march would have been a characteristic sound over the past 100 years. Â And furthermore there is a direct link to this town since in 1927 Fred Jewell was appointed Director of the Masonic Home Band in Franklin, (and Jewell also happens to be a cousin of this composer!) Â The middle Chorale section of this composition has woven in 11 very short quotes from known songs that will remind listeners of Franklin institutions or values and virtues that helped build the town. Â The final section is pure celebration in the form of a Caribbean calypso. Â
