Latin.Joe Duddell’s Magnificat and Nunc Dimtis was commissioned by Presteigne Festival of Music and the Arts with funding from Kevin Jones and Laura Woodside-Jones and received its first performance by the Choir of Royal Holloway conducted by Rupert Gough at the 2011 Presteigne Festival. Duddell has acknowledged in the past that whilst composing any piece of music, problems arise that require solutions and this new setting of the “Mag and Nunc� is no different. The main challenge for a composer who is openly agnostic is the historical weight behind the liturgical text but taking both musical and philosophical inspiration from composers such as Holst and Tippett, Duddell’s setting is a joyous and uplifting one.Opening with sustained harmonies saturated with open sounding 4ths and 5ths, the music soon leads to faster passages that chase one another. The organ adds syncopation to relatively straight vocal rhythms and at other time emphasises denser rhythmic textures. The work is dedicated to George Vass.

First performed by the Psophos Quartet at the 2007 Presteigne Festival and recently transcribed for string orchestra, Duddell embraces the historical weight of the prestigious string quartet medium by alluding to a wealth of masterpieces by Mozart, Stravinsky, Debussy, Beethoven, Tippett and Webern. Despite these acknowledged references, the music is still distinctly Duddell's, with catchy melodic lines, tender harmonies and rhythmic energy. This is a fantastic new work for young quartets interested in new repertoire.

Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q19047). Joe Duddell's music is not bound to any one genre: he has taken on projects with dubstep pioneers, like Nero, alongside commissions for concertos. His ethereal work for solo organ contrasts intricate and highly rhythmic sequences with a slow moving harmonic structure and in the resulting 10-minute work, influence can be heard from both sacred and electronic music. The initial patterns repeat, overlap, and subtly change to create a slowly evolving wash of glorious harmony. Duddell makes use of the varied colours of the organ, beginning with a subdued treble and working to an exhilarating, full bellow. Temporal Keys would make an excellent addition to the repertoire of any enthusiastic organist.

With a title that makes reference to the band REM, Duddell's Nightswimming subtly gathers its own momentum and direction, moving away from the nocturne which is suggested in the opening. Despite - or maybe because of - its allusions to the twilight hours, this (like much of Duddell's music) is playful music which focuses on imaginative interaction between the instruments.

Dedicated to John McCabe after Duddell was impressed with the opening chorale of McCabe's 'Cloudcatcher Fells', the eight minute work owes its freshness and vitality to Duddell's clarity of part writing, sparing use of the pedal and the preference for a non-legato touch.

The title Still Life, whilst being a term borrowed from painting, refers to the two temporal states of the piece, status and motion, which are juxtaposed and superimposed throughout. The static sections often lead into choral-like music, one of the references to Bach in the piece, which was commissioned by the Harper Ensemble for the 250 th anniversary of his death. The other principle reference comes in the trumpet’s opening figures which relate to material found in one of Bach’s harpsichord concertos. Joe Duddell.

However, the piece took on much more of a fantasia feel and shape as I wrote it and it could be argued that a second theme first heard in the violin of the ground (derived from material in bar 5) becomes more dominant than the first as the piece progresses. The piece is in one continuous movement but is in three distinct sections and tempi: medium, slow and fast. The material shares some similarities with my piano trio, Nightswimming, and in some ways can be seen as a companion piece (minus the cello of course). The title comes from a track on an album by the artist St. Vincent called Marry Me which I hope is appropriate for a piece commissioned to celebrate a wedding anniversary.Joe Duddell 2010.

Although she appears to behave normally, when the lid is closed she has a life of her own. The combination of vibraphone and guitar quartet depict this scene with ravishing sonority. This is the third work Duddell has written for the percussionist Colin Currie, who gave the premiere with the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. They toured the work in the USA in 2004 and have recently released the work on CD for Telarc.
