One of his most well-known works is The Crucifixion, which is still heard at Passiontide in some Anglican churches.Born in Southwark, London, Stainer became a chorister at St Paul's Cathedral at ten and was appointed organist at St Michael's College, Tenbury, at sixteen. He later became organist at Magdalen College, Oxford, and St Paul's Cathedral. After retiring due to poor health, he became Professor of Music at Oxford.
