Originally written for clarinet and piano, Suite in Sea is a fun and quirky work composed by Kara Williams (drawing on her own time at sea in the Navy) that has been re-orchestrated for Viola and Piano by the composer.

A suite of four short programmatic movements, we first follow a young sailor as they stagger around the deck on their first voyage - finally succumbing to the corkscrew motion of the ocean in Sea Sick Shanty; then enjoying a moment of peace and beauty as the ship sails through an Archipelago teaming with marine life; in Brew Time March, the young sailor excitedly hears the bugle call to have a break from work (brew time), grab a coffee and sit on the bow to watch the waves and lost in thoughts, they unexpectedly hears the sound of work recommencing, and scurry back, making it just in the nick of time, waiting eagerly for next the next call for Brew Time - and the preparation, spectacle, pride, and excitement of Sailing into Harbour concludes this suite suitable for an intermediate to more advanced player looking for something entertaining and a little bit different.

Suite in Sea is a fun and quirky work for solo clarinet and piano composed by Kara Williams. Each movement draws on inspiration from Kara’s own time at sea serving in the military imagined as a suite of four short programmatic movements.

In need of a short, fun, and exciting encore piece, this little ‘ear-worm’ was composed for the Assai Quartet (flute, violin, guitar, and bassoon) by Kara Williams in 2022. Based in the Riverina Region of New South Wales, Australia, the Assai Quartet also recorded this work on the album ‘Origin’.  Loosely translating as ‘We’re Finished!’ Hemos Acabado channels the energy and style of Latin-American music and has been re-orchestrated for upper-intermediate to more advanced Clarinet soloist (including easier ossia sections) and Piano by the composer. At just under two minutes Hemos Acabado is a fantastic tornado of semiquaver passages grounded by a comforting and toe tappingly recurring rhythmic motif: a great inclusion any program - and not just at the end!

A 2024 entrant in the Arrange Me ‘Metallica for Marching Band’ Competition, this clever, fun (and very, VERY catchy!) arrangement of Metallica’s ‘Fade To Black’ by Kara Williams has been completely reimagined in an Afro-Cuban “Guaguanco” style groove with Metallica’s distinctive vocal and guitar lines shining through. With fantastic rhythmic teaching points throughout, this chart also has scoring flexibility making it accessible for a range larger and smaller ensembles – including wind ensemble settings. Admittedly, the choice of title for this work for novice wind ensemble was based more on what would rhyme with the word ‘Tumbarumba’, than staying true to the style of the North American Latin groove made popular in the 1930s! It does; however, introduce players to some of the musical aspects found in Latin American and Afro-Cuban music in an accessible way. Written for and premiered by the Sturt Public School Band (near the town of Tumbarumba) this fun work utilises narrow instrumental tessituras, and incorporates simple off off-beat entries, section solis, layered melodies, and a fun bass line that will keep your low woodwind and brass players engaged and audience tapping their feet all the way through! Optional easier (rather than harmonically lower) 3rd trumpet and 3rd clarinet parts make this chart more inclusive and achievable for less experienced players; and, at around two and a half minutes in length, it’s a great addition to any concert!

Originally written for and recorded by the Regional New South Wales ensemble the 'Assai Quartet' (comprsing flute, violin, acoustic guitar, and bassoon), Allegro 'Assai' (titled after the ensemble) is one of Kara's first compositons chamber group, and combines a gentle pastural sensibility with quirky harmonic and melodic twists. The gentle interplay between the instruments weaves a joyous earworm that engages both performers and audience from start to finish.

This arrangement for Woodwind Quintet is by the composer, Kara Williams; an Australian woodwind multi-instrumentalist and foundation member of the Assai Quartet (bassoon). Aimed at intermediate+ to more accomplished players, this 3'50 work is a perfect little addition to any program.

The third movement from the four movement 'Suite in Sea' written for clarinet and piano by Kara Williams, 'Brew Time March' has been orchestrated for wind ensemble by the composer and has since proven to be a favourite with performers and audiences.

Opening with the 'Stand Easy' (break time) bugle call, Brew Time March is full of familiarly-sea-worthy sounds, and is a fun concert march that would be a great addition to any ensemble's library.
 
In the style of a traditional military march, unless otherwise specified, notes should be played slightly detached throughout. Ensure the bass solo has plenty of attitude, and the rhythmic accompanying parts let the melodies breathe. Use a small set of crash cymbals (if parade-style cymbals are not available) - your percussionist will thank you! Also, hit the cymbals together slightly off-centre for zing and dynamic control, and hold the edges of the cymbals against the body to choke the ring where indicated. Keep this march a very steady two-feel throughout; however, feel free to completely stress the upper woodwinds out by going as fast as musically possible where marked at the end :-)
 
Brew Time March runs for around 2:45 and is scored for full wind ensemble; however, it will work without one, some, or all the following parts: piccolo, 4th clarinet, baritone sax, bass clarinet, bassoon, horns in F, and bass trombone.
