This favorite song from the musical Oklahoma is arranged in a lively, jazz-waltz style for brass Quintet.  While the off-beat rhythms may appear daunting at first, once the groove is established it is consitently used throughout the piece and becomes more comfortable for the musicians.  The melody gets passed around to all parts, but especially features the Horn and Trumpets.  This arrangement would be a fun up-beat addition to any program.

This arrangement starts out with a ram-horn call and then quickly jumps into a swing-groove. The melody gets passed to various instruments, while the rest of the ensemble provides fills and counter-melodies. The music builds to a full sound when suddenly the first trumpet starts a quasi-fugue with the second trumpet and horn. The low brass join to take it to a big finish. This high energy, crowd pleasing piece was written with intermediate to advanced-intermediate ensembles in mind.

Despite the minor mode, this familiar Christmas melody is arranged with rich energetic rhythmic textures and ancient-modern harmonies. The listener may receive images of the three wise men riding their camels across barren lands. The Trombone introduces the tune first and then it gets passed around to the other instruments as the piece progresses. Because the melody is familiar but not over-used, this would be a good programing contrast to the traditional songs of the season.

This is a light-hearted arrangement that starts out with a swinging Trombone and Tuba duet. In the second and third verses, the ensemble joins in with playful interplay among the instruments. Things slow down in the fourth verse where the Horn takes us to church. For the last verse, the second Trumpet gets a little love by taking the lead to take us home. Whether used in church or programed in a community event, this arrangement is sure to get some toes tapping.

This arrangement of the traditional hymn begins with the low brass playing a determined bass line that supports a progressive addition of melody and harmony. The texture changes to an antiphonal-style that could possibly be performed with the ensemble split in two. The piece returns to the grounded feel but with full sounds and rich harmonies. This work would be a satisfying prelude to a congregational singing of the hymn in its traditional format or simply programed for concert settings. While not technically difficult, this music will challenge the endurance and focus of the trombone and tuba players.

This is a light-hearted, lilting piece where, in the first half of the work, the upper-brass play an antiphonal game of tag with the lower brass. The syncopation that Vecchi introduces is developed to add an additional level of playfulness.
