COLOURS – a song collection for mezzo-soprano & piano

Largely untrained, only basically educated and living most his life as a rural worker, Neilson became known as one of Australia's finest lyric poets, who wrote much about the natural world, and the beauty in it.  His poetry is peppered with references to colours particularly of the Australian landscape, notably green, yellow and orange.  There is an art gallery named for him and an art prize in his name requires competing artists to interpret his poems in paint.. His lyricism has appealed to many composers, and in this collection setting six of his poems, I have attempted to capture both his lyricism and his “colourings”. The songs are dedicated variously to the superb mezzo-sopranos, Alessandra Volpe and Deborah Humble.

The six song I have set for this Volume 1 are:
1.      Paint Me A Petticoat Green
2.      Roses Three
3.      To Dulcie in a White Dress
4.      You and Yellow Air
5.      The Orange Tree
6.      Song in the Yellow.

Instrumental Duet Alto Saxophone,Instrumental Duet,Soprano Saxophone - Level 5 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1016979

Composed by Lea Detlefs. Concert,Contemporary,Standards,World. Score and parts. 3 pages. Lea Detlefs #6114259. Published by Lea Detlefs (A0.1016979).

A wide ranging, effervescent piece great for a recital or encore.  Cycles through the key of B flat, E flat, and E major.  While originally for soprano sax, alto can also play the music as written and it will simply sound in a lower range from the recording.  Trills, quick flourishes of ascending or descending scales, and bending of notes in the high range are some of the beautiful features of this music.

This piece was inspired by the many wonderful Indian classical music performances I was able to attend while living in Austin, TX. It is meant to sound like an improvisation, and at one point even invites the player to add their own improvisation. The melodic lines are meant to be evocative of the sitar, while the trills preceded or followed by a short staccato exclamation recall the energetic tabla. This piece is not derived from a raga, but the title pays homage to the idea in classical Indian music that the various raga each bring up certain feelings and associations in the minds of the audience, or in other words, colour the mind.

Composed by Brandon Nelson. 20th Century,Chamber,Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival. 37 pages. Brandon Nelson #800346. Published by Brandon Nelson (A0.1201730).

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and his theory on how colors impacted mental states was the inspiration for this piece. He was far more gifted with prose than I, so I’ll him explain further:

We shall not be surprised to find that [colours’] effects are at all times decided and significant, and that they are immediately associated with the emotions of the mind.

Colour, considered as an element of art, may be made subservient to the highest aesthetical needs.

General impressions produced by single colours cannot be changed[.] They act specifically and must produce definite, specific states in the living organ. Experience teaches us that particular colours excite particular states of feeling.

Goethe goes on to detail these notions in an elaborate, deeply imaginative treatise. Sadly for him, this work was coming out just as the science of optics had begun to give the world an empirical understanding of color, leaving Goethe’s romantic ideas in the margins.

But it is those ideas that I find intriguing from a poetic viewpoint, and, in this composition, I shed musical light unto his dramatic descriptions of several different colors.

“Yellow-Red” is described as “primordial, impetuous, robust,” to the point of eliciting “extreme excitement” which disturbs and enrages even animals!

“Yellow” is portrayed as that being nearest to natural light. It is of “utmost purity and beauty[….] Serene, gay, softly exciting.”

The color “Red-Blue” we are told is “something lively without gladness.”

“Blue” is steeped in darkness, a “contradiction between excitement and repose.” It gives one the “impression of cold.” and brings to mind melancholy.

Violin and piano - difficult - Digital Download

SKU: S9.Q21833

For violin and piano. Composed by Thierry Pecou. This edition: Sheet music. Downloadable. Duration 6 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q21833. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q21833).

This work is part of a cycle of five short pieces for a single instrument and piano, focused on the five ages in the cosmogony of Ancient Mexican civilisation. The peoples of the Mexican highlands believe that time follows specific cycles and that the world was created following the pattern of 'trial and error'. The creation of the world is divided into several periods which are termed 'suns' (we are currently living in the fifth phase named 'Ollin'). Each period will be brought to an end through a natural catastrophe. Solei-Feu refers to the first attempt to create a world out of a rain of fire (nahui quiahuitl). The element of fire is reflected in the musical soundscape of this work, constructed from rampant, rhythmic motifs, fragmented splinters, spinning upswings and impacts reverberating through space. An intimate dialogue develops between violin and piano on the basis of extremely simple figures. Interconnecting lines and dense musical material are thrown against each other in a play of contrasting registers and blended tonal colouring, creating a mysterious and disturbing mythological universe coloured by its ontological pessimism. Thierry PĂ©cou

Sunset Song

Silent shimmers catch my eye

Evening sun languid and low in the sky.

A throw of red-coloured light reaching deep, deep, down the hall

blushes shyly on my living room wall.

And I look to the sky.

Painted bluer and bluer

as twilight falls, still deeper descends

until all of the sky is an indigo bird!

And a black diamond, shining, envelopes the world.
