Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.734886

Composed by Joseph Hasper. Broadway,Contemporary,Jazz. Score and parts. 90 pages. Joseph Hasper #4605885. Published by Joseph Hasper (A0.734886).

A dramatic reading for jazz ensemble and narrators based on sayings attributed to Yogi Berra. Scored for jazz ensemble 5-4-4 g/p/b/d with two speaking parts (The Interviewer and Yogi Berra).

In this theatrical piece of music an interviewer intends to have a serious talk about jazz with noted jazz historian Yogi Berra. Yogi doesn't mean to be funny but merely expresses himself with jumbled, illogical logic. The dialogue is broken in three scenes, each of which is framed with a musical interlude.

Performed by the Grove City College Jazz Ensemble with Dr. Joshua Drake (The Interviewer) and Dr. Andrew Mitchell (Yogi Berra) on May 3, 2019.

Composed by James Smith. 19th Century,Chamber,Children,Comedy,Contemporary. 26 pages. Ensemble Llama Music #1046028. Published by Ensemble Llama Music (A0.1467733).

The Princess and the Pea is a literary fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. It is a story about a princess who is tested to become wife to a lonely prince. The tale was first published in 1835 in Copenhagen. In this work, the tale is presented by a narrator, with the wind quintet bringing the story to life in a musical way. This selection comes with a full score with cues for the narrator, parts for the ensemble, and a narrator's script that features ensemble cues to help align the story and music together properly.

There are many features in this work that are sure to interest audiences of all ages. Different motifs are used to differentiate between characters and settings. The ensemble may find an opportunity to invite the audience to actively listen to these themes. This selection also features the use of props - a cutting board (preferably with a cutout area to grip the board easily) and an inflated latex balloon are required to make various sound effects. There are several other ways the ensemble and narrator could use props or costumes to bring the story to life, and offer some humorous moments as well.

This work is quite different, but serves as a fresh selection for any concert. If you have any questions, or wish to let me know you performed this work, contact me at

A setting of the La Fontaine poem La cigale et la fourmi with narrator (in French), clarinet, bassoon and piano

The pdf file contains score and instrumental parts. The narrator should use the score.

(A version with English narrator is also available on this site)

La cigale, ayant chanté tout l’été,
se trouva fort dépourvue
Quand la bise fut venue.
Pas un seul petit morceau
De mouche ou de vermisseau.
Elle alla crier famine
Chez la fourmi sa voisine,
La priant de lui prêter
Quelque grain pour subsister
Jusqu’à la saison nouvelle.
“Je vous paierai,”
lui dit elle,
“avant l’août,
foi d’animal,
Intérêt et principal.”
La fourmi n’est pas prêteuse;
C’est là son moindre défaut.
“Que faisiez vous au temps chaud?”
Dit elle Ă  cette emprunteuse
“Nuit et jour à tout venant
Je chantais,
ne vous déplaise.”
“Vous chantiez?
j’en suis fort aise.
Eh bien!
dansez maintenant.”

English translation by S N Solomons

The Grasshopper in drowsy song
Had spent the pleasant summer long,
And found herself without a crumb
When winter’s icy blast had come.
Not one small morsel could she spy
Of puny worm or measly fly.

So off she went to cry her want
Straight to her neighbour Madame Ant,
Merely asking for a loan
Of bread or grain to eke her own
Until the plenteous time came round.

“I’ll pay you back, or I’ll be bound
By August, word of animal,
Both interest and principal.”

The Ants are not a lending lot
Indeed that is their slightest fault.

“What were you doing when ’twas hot?”
She asked this impecunious sort.
” To all who came, both day and night
I used to sing at every chance.”

“You used to sing? That’s fine and right!
Well now’s the very time – to dance!”

Composed by Therese Brenet. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 33 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3053317. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533846).

ThĂ©rèse Brenet's work for narrator and orchestra is inspried by a passage from De Rerum Natura by Lucretius, which deals with Man's reaction to observing the cosmos.  The work is scored for large orchestra (2(pic)222/3330/Timp/2perc/hp/pn/strings).  There is no precise interaction between the narrator and the music, except that each segment corresponds to a specific movement.  It is up to the conductor and the narrator to define how they wish the text to interact with the music.  This is the score only.  The orchestral parts are on rental from the publisher.

Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Baroque,Classical,Contemporary,Romantic Period. Score and parts. With Pluto … The Lord of the Underworld. (2005) This year, 2009, he asked me if I would be interested in writing a work for narrator and chamber orchestra like Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf.” I said, “Yes. I would be delighted to do so.” He. 90 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #431371. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869309).

Program note.
Maestro Charles Ansbacher has been a devoted supporter of my work for many years. In the past 6 years he has commissioned me to write two works for his ensemble, the Boston Landmarks Orchestra:

1) Mambo!!! (2003)
2) Pluto … The Lord of the Underworld (2005)

This year, 2009, he asked me if I would be interested in writing a work for narrator and chamber orchestra like Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. I said, Yes. I would be delighted to do so. He told me that the subject for this work would be Boston’s own landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. Sure, I said, why not? Charles told me he had a poet in mind who would provide the text, Nancy Stevenson. I said, Great!

The work is in four parts, following Ms. Stevenson’s poetic design.

I wrote a marching music in Part One depicting Mr. Olmsted when as a child he walked from his home to his aunts and uncles who lived far away. As a young man, Mr. Olmsted went through many jobs until he decided that as a landscape architect he could make cities a better place for children and adults alike. The mayor of Boston hired him to do just that, to make Boston more livable.

In Part Two, I wrote presto music depicting the dredging of the Charles River and the planting of trees along its shores.

In Part Three, the text describes the Boston Emerald Necklace – the paths that lead from the Fens to the Arboretum to Franklin Park. For this section I chose music that is bucolic and pastoral, a setting that evokes the country side with a flock of sheep, complete with a shepherd and his dog.

In the last section the text describes Mr. Olmsted’s dream that in his parks there would be tranquility and rest to the mind … a place where the rich and the poor would play together. The music returns to the legato march that began the work.
