Written by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken and performed by Pat Carroll, Poor Unfortunate Souls is sung to Ariel by Ursula the Sea Witch (the film's villainess). In a style that combines Broadway theatre with Burlesque, Ursula uses the song to seduce Ariel into trading her voice for the chance to temporarily become human.In this version, the composition was arranged for Symphonic Orchestra and Solo Voice by Harry Walker.

A friend of mine, Chad Walker, came to me with the standard sheet music to this piece and asked me to make it harder, fit the hands better, and fill it out.  Much to his delight and chagrin, this is the final result.

This piece would be perfect for playing in church, especially during Easter or Pentecost.  It would also be nice for the last Sunday in Epiphany when many liturgical churches say, Goodbye to the word, Hallelujah.

The first verse is relatively simple, with a bassline arpeggio that fits the hand nicely.  The chord inversions in the interludes are supposed to represent the angels on Jacob's Ladder.  The second verse is a little more full with some ornamentation.  The third verse culminates in block chords in the right hand with a bassline that alternates between a heartbeat and running feet.

Amory Suite is a four movement tone poem, based on Amory Park & Hall's Pond Sanctuary in Brookline, Massachusetts. The original main theme, Oaks of Amory, is introduces each movement on the piano, in the place of the listener, arriving at the next section of the park. Movement I: The Fields highlights the joggers, dog-walkers, couples on benches, and people at play, each at their own pace. Movement II: Hall's Pond celebrates the tranquil pond sanctuary, with waterfowl, owls, and turtles. Movement III: The Temple begins with a procession of small fauna: squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, and a racoon. They lead to Amory Park's small, neoclassical gazebo, where they dance a minuet, and then scatter. Movement IV: The Oaks of Amory follows along the promenade of enormous oak trees that dominates the west hill of the park, leading to a grand finale.

Borne was a flutist with the principal opera company in Bordeaux as well as a composer and professor at the conservatory in Toulouse. Expert in both instrumental technique and in the development of the flute as an instrument, he is still recognized for his technical contributions to the Böhm flute. His Fantasie Brillante on Themes from Bizet’s Carmen is by far his most famous composition. Borne’s setting of Carmen’s luscious melodies – like those by Sarasate for the violin, and by Busoni and Horowitz for the piano – combine the virtuoso’s understanding of the solo instrument with a flair for the dance rhythms and passionate colors of the opera. Borne fills his setting with spectacular arpeggios that require fleet fingering and consummate breath control. Carmen’s brilliant Habanera, a traditional dance that she performs with castanets (and with abundant flirting), anchors the work. But the mood of Borne’s Carmen is far brighter than that of the fatalistic Gypsy girl of Bizet’s opera. In Borne’s showpiece, a set of brilliant variations on her showy Habanera leads to a triumphant close – in marked contrast with the opera’s violent, tragic ending. In this version, the composition was arranged for Solo Flute and Concert Band by Harry Walker.

A celebration of life, unity, and music, this is a setting of a poem by the 19th-century British author John Addington Symonds (1840-1893). The text speaks of the future with hope: A loftier race then e'er the world has known shall rise. The healing and transforming power of music is essential to this hope. When every life shall be a song, then all the earth is a paradise. Throughout, the message is triumphant: These things shall be!
The musical expression alternates between added-tone chords (representing building for the future) and melodic phrases for the more tender passages of the poem: we will be gentle, brave, and strong ). Commissioned and premiered by the Boston Gay Men's Chorus. Duration: 3:30.

AMAZING GRACE by John Newton for Brass Trio
Sailor-turned-Anglican cleric John Newton was known for his diary notes, articles for pamphlets, letters, hymns, and sermons, his most famous being Amazing Grace!
His path from rebellious young man to pious man began on March 21, 1748, when he experienced a violent storm at sea, nearly capsized, and cried out, The Lord have mercy on us! which surprised him.   From that date forward, March 21 became a day of remembrance, thanksgiving, fasting, and prayer.
After suffering a severe stroke in 1754, he gave up seafaring and moved to London. As a Cleric, his New Year's sermon of 1773 closely resembles the text he wrote in the Onley Hymns, published in 1779.
The American folk-like hymn we know as New Britain did not become commonly associated with Newton's text until 1835, when it was published in The Southern Harmony by American William Walker.   By the 1970s, the haunting tune was set to bagpipes.   Since then, it has become the most played tune for Remembrance services, funerals, Celebrations of Life, and memorials.
This setting includes 5 verses, of which any of Verses 2, 3, or 4 can be repeated.   Written in the key of Eb Major, it is in a comfortable key, permitting it to be used as an accompaniment to singing and on its own.   The instrumental leads and harmonies differ for each verse.
Instrumentation is for British Brass Band instruments of Cornet, Eb Tenor Horn, and Bb Euphonium (TC).    Horn and Bass Clef Euphonium alternates are included.
