SKU: A0.526213

By Nirvana. By David Bowie. Arranged by Sarah Cellobat Chaffee. Pop,Rock. 9 pages. Sarah Cellobat Chaffee #6022505. Published by Sarah Cellobat Chaffee (A0.526213).

The classic David Bowie song The Man Who Sold The World (made popular again in the 90's by Nirvana on MTV Unplugged) gets new life in this arrangement for violin and cello duet! This fun version maintains the fun groove, catchy melody line, and dynamic interest of the original, and it will be great for pop concerts, receptions, parties, cocktail hour, solo & ensemble contests, or any other occasion that needs some out-of-this-world 70's rock. This arrangement is rated intermediate -- there are a handful of ties and syncopated rhythms throughout, but neither part ever leaves first position, and it will be easily playable for students and sightreadable for professionals.

By David Bowie. By David Bowie. Arranged by Kevin Riley. 20th Century,Pop. 42 pages. Kevin Riley #1042792. Published by Kevin Riley (A0.1464081).

Life on Mars? is a song by the English singer-songwriter David Bowie, first released on his 1971 album Hunky Dory. Bowie wrote the song as a parody of Frank Sinatra's My Way. Life on Mars? was recorded on 6 August 1971 at Trident Studios in London, and was co-produced by Bowie and Ken Scott. Bowie's backing band consisted of guitarist and string arranger Mick Ronson, bassist Trevor Bolder, drummer Mick Woodmansey and Strawbs member Rick Wakeman on piano. Life on Mars? is primarily a glam rock ballad, with elements of cabaret and art rock; it has a complex structure that includes chord changes throughout. The lyrics are about a girl who goes to a cinema to escape reality, and include surreal images that reflect optimism and the effects of Hollywood.

At the height of Bowie's fame as Ziggy Stardust, RCA Records issued Life on Mars? as a single on 22 June 1973 in the United Kingdom, where it peaked at number three. To promote the single, photographer Mick Rockfilmed a video that shows Bowie in make-up and a turquoise suit singing the song against a white backdrop. Bowie frequently performed Life on Mars? during his concerts and the song has appeared on numerous compilation albums. Scott remixed the song in 2003 and 2016, the latter being a stripped down mix.

Life on Mars? is considered by commentators as one of Bowie's greatest songs, and one of the best songs of all time. Critics have praised Bowie's vocal performance and growth as a songwriter. The song's title was given to the British television series Life on Mars, and films and other television programmes have included Life on Mars?. Artists including Barbra Streisand, and Nine Inch Nails members Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, have recorded cover versions of the song; and following Bowie's death in 2016, Life on Mars? was frequently chosen as a tribute to the artist.

By David Bowie. By David Bowie. Arranged by Jon Conway. Pop,Rock. Octavo. 6 pages. Jon Conway #5044283. Published by Jon Conway (A0.935557).

I arranged this song as a tribute to Bowie after hearing of his passing in 2016. It was first performed at a National voice camp for community choirs and it quickly became a firm favourite.

It’s a fun arrangement in 4-part SSAA with an epic dramatic finale. A firm crowd-pleaser for any show package. Suitable for female choir or barbershop chorus (not suitable for competition).

It’s a medium to advanced difficulty.

For more information and teach tracks please contact the arranger Jon Conway: jon.musicman@gmail.com.

By Gloria Gaynor. By Harry Simeone, Henry Onorati, and Katherine K. Davis. Arranged by Justin K. Reeve. Christmas,Holiday,New Age. Score. 3 pages. Justin Kenlon Reeve #1078230. Published by Justin Kenlon Reeve (A0.1502425).

“Little Drummer Boy,” originally titled “Carol of the Drum,” is based on a traditional Czech carol. In 1957, Henry Onorati arranged the song for a recording by the Jack Halloran Singers, but it was not released in time for Christmas. The next year, Harry Simeone was looking for material to create a Christmas album, and Onorati introduced him to the “Carol of the Drum.” Simeone re-arranged the song, retitled it “The Little Drummer Boy,” and recorded it with the Harry Simeone Chorale on the album Sing We Now of Christmas. The song is the story of a young shepherd boy who joins the procession of the wise men and other humble admirers to the Savior’s manger. When the boy reaches the gathering, others present gifts, but all the boy can afford is his gift of making music on his drum. Over 200 versions of this song in at least seven languages have been written.

In September 1977, an additional track was recorded for Bing Crosby’s Merrie Olde Christmas television special, performed by Crosby and David Bowie. According to co-writer Ian Fraser, Bowie balked at singing “Little Drummer Boy.” “I hate this song. Is there something else I could sing?” Fraser recalls Bowie telling him. Fraser, along with songwriter Larry Grossman and the special’s scriptwriter, Buz Kohan, then wrote the “Peace on Earth” lyrics as a counterpoint to “Little Drummer Boy.” Crosby performed “Little Drummer Boy,” while Bowie sang the new tune “Peace on Earth,” which they reportedly performed after less than an hour of rehearsal. Crosby never lived to see his performance on television, as he died a month after recording. The show aired in November 1977 on CBS.

'Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy' is a christmas song performed by English singer-songwriter David Bowie, and American Singer Bing Crosby. Recorded in 1977 at ATV Elstree Studios near London for Crosby's TV Special Merrie Olde Christmas, The song features Bing Crosby singing the old 1941 standard 'Little Drummer Boy', whilst Bowie sing's 'Peace on Earth' as a counterpoint melody, written by the special's musical supervisors Ian Fraser, Lawrence Grossman & scriptwriter Alan Buz Kohan, specially for the collaboration. The Duet was one of Bing Crosby's final recordings before his death in October 1977.

This British Brass Band arrangement would be a great addition to any christmas program and captures the real spirit of these two wonderful melodies.
