This saxophone quintet with bass (electric is preferred, but upright could work) and drums opens with a funky hook figure and settles into a swinging, harmonized treatment of the melody. Chord changes are provided for the tenor sax soloist, who is accompanied by background figures performed by the other saxes. A challenging, Supersax-style soli takes place over the chord progression. A fun and lighthearted straight eighth waltz treatment of the melody gives way to swing and, finally, a return to the funky, swinging shuffle. Lillian Hardin Armstrong was an American jazz pianist, composer, arranger, singer, and bandleader; she was the second wife of trumpeter Louis Armstrong, with whom she collaborated on many recordings in the 1920s. “Struttin’ with Some Barbecue” was originally composed in 1927 as an instrumental piece, with lyrics added by Don Raye in 1941. This popular song has been recorded more than 600 times, notable covers include those performed Gil Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Paul Desmond, Herbie Hancock, the Marsalis family and Earl Hines. When filing for divorce, Lillian sued Louis for custody of the song; Hardin won, though Armstrong continued to claim ownership for years after. This arrangement for concert band has been drawn from the jazz ensemble version by Rick Stitzel and features short solos for trumpet and alto sax. Arranged as part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women into the worldwide concert band repertoire.

This is a simple funk arrangement based off John Philip Sousa's march Rolling Thunder.  Unison melody, bass line, and funk beat similar to Herbie Hancock's Chameleon. The first two intro measures of Rolling Thunder are repeated in the A section with an original B section. I've performed this for the past five years in the Marine Band in California and North Carolina.  Quick and easy work up the brass band will enjoy jamming with and always gets the crowd moving.
