By Stephen R Dalrymple. By Elizabeth C. Clephane 1830–1869 (lyrics) and Frederick Charles Maker 1844–1927. Arranged by Stephen R Dalrymple. Contemporary,Sacred. Score. 12 pages. Stephen R Dalrymple #3098321. Published by Stephen R Dalrymple (A0.818235).

Beneath the Cross of Jesus ♫ Original piano arrangement by Stephen R Dalrymple
♫ Based on the public domain hymn by Elizabeth C. Clephane 1830–1869 (lyrics) and Frederick Charles Maker 1844–1927 (melody)
♫ In preparing to compose the arrangement I asked myself “What would be the opposite of “Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand.” How could I picture that? The opposite of firm footing, stability, taking a stand is vacillating between ideas or chasing numerous ideas.
♫ I pictured the wind scattering leaves and debris, but failing to budge heavy objects, anchored to the ground.
♫ Our culture bids us chase after status, power, money, pleasure, thrills
The problem, of course is that the shelf life of the satisfaction that these things brings is very short. Chasing after status, power, money, pleasure, thrills, etc. is like is like chasing the wind.
♫ Portraying chasing the wind allowed me to use some contemporary classical composition techniques such as polymeter, polytonality, and deliberate dissonance. The first theme suggests the futility and inevitable frustration of chasing the wind. The score opens up to the beauty of a life grounded on the cross of Jesus Christ.

The History of the Song 'Ave Maria'

The song Ave Maria is one of the most beloved and recognized pieces of classical music. It is a musical setting of the Latin prayer Hail Mary and is often performed at religious ceremonies such as weddings and funerals. The history of Ave Maria dates back several centuries and has been shaped by numerous composers and cultural influences.

The origins of the prayer Hail Mary can be traced back to the Bible, where it is recorded in the Gospel of Luke. The prayer is a traditional Catholic devotional that honors the Virgin Mary, and has been an important part of Catholic liturgy and piety for centuries.

The musical setting of Ave Maria that is most commonly known today was composed by the Austrian composer Franz Schubert in 1825. Schubert's version of Ave Maria was originally written as part of a song cycle titled Die schöne MĂŒllerin (The Beautiful Miller's Wife) but it soon became popular as a standalone piece.

Schubert's version of Ave Maria was written for voice and piano, and its soaring melody and gentle accompaniment captured the beauty and reverence of the prayer. Schubert's composition has been performed and recorded countless times by musicians around the world, and it remains one of his most beloved and enduring works.

In addition to Schubert's version, Ave Maria has been set to music by many other composers over the years, including Johann Sebastian Bach, Charles Gounod, and Giulio Caccini. Each composer's interpretation of the prayer reflects their own unique cultural and musical influences, and has contributed to the diverse and rich history of this beloved piece of music.

Today, Ave Maria remains a cherished part of religious and cultural celebrations around the world, and its timeless beauty and spiritual power continue to inspire and uplift listeners of all backgrounds and beliefs.

Composed by J S Bach-Gounod. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Easter,Sacred,Wedding. Score and part. 6 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #899560. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.1310502).

This ever-popular piece is often performed at weddings, funerals and many other solemn ceremonial events. It has always been a favorite among instrumental players and often used in recitals or concert encores. This arrangement by Colin Kirkpatrick is ideal for the intermediate bassoon player. It is in concert C and range is from G on the lowest line of the bass clef to the E just above the staff.

In 1853, the well-known French composer Charles Gounod added his own melody over a rippling keyboard accompaniment which was a slightly adapted version of the Prelude No. 1 in C major, BWV846, from Book I of J. S. Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier, published in 1722. The title of the “combined” piece was MĂ©ditation sur le Premier PrĂ©lude de Piano de S. Bach. Gounod’s original arrangement transposed Bach’s keyboard part from C major into F major and it was scored for violin (or cello), organ and piano. In 1859, the French music publishing company Jacques-LĂ©opold Heugel brought out a vocal version based on the familiar Latin text. Ave Maria (Hail Mary) is a traditional Catholic prayer addressed to the Virgin Mary.

The version of Bach's prelude which Gounod used included the so-called Schwencke measure (m. 27 in this arrangement), a measure (bar) allegedly added by the German composer and pianist Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke (1767-1822) in an attempt to correct what was considered a harmonic weakness in the original. Whether there actually was a “harmonic weakness” (or possibly an error in the manuscript) remains a matter of conjecture but the fact remains that the most familiar-sounding version of this piece, recorded countless times by both singers and instrumentalists includes this Schwencke measure. It is therefore included in this arrangement.

Some published arrangements show minor inconsistencies in the rhythm of the melody. This arrangement uses the familiar rhythm of the Ave Maria version as it appeared in the 1859 edition.
